Considering an S5 Pro, I have some questions

Do you find that the original image data is properly preserved? Do they have the same tonal range as originally captured? What about meta data, is that all preserved?

All is preserved. I remember this question asked to Thomas Knoll, one of leaders in Adobe Development Group (and a head programmer behind Photoshop and Lightroom) who confirmed that. All functionality stays. Ha! :)

Thank you - DNG it is! I think I will archive as DNG too as I will need half the space on the DVDs and just bin the RAFs. It does beg the question what the additional 12MB that RAFs take up over DNGs is doing.

The answer is simple: RAF files are less compressed, if at all. DNG uses stronger compression algorithm for packing data. That's all. :) I personally think that Fuji left compression on a smaller level as the higher ratio requires more processing power - and S5 is not a fast camera on itself, so just imagine what would happen if you'd ask it to compress the files more...
