Connecting 2 pc,s?

Ok here is something i am trying to figure out,i have my pc set up as normal with a 22 inch w/s,all normally set up.
Here is what i am trying to figure an answer to,i have a spare acer pc lying around,not that old really.
Anyway how can i connect the second pc to my own pc & power it up just so that i can access the other pc,s hard drive through my existing monitor,hope i have explained that ok. :)
 
If you just want to share 1 keyboard,mouse, montior on the 2 Pc's you need something like this
 
why not save the hassle and bother, and remove the hard drive from spare, ( i presume its a spare because its not upto todays spec), and add it to the pc your using.

the minimum you will require, if your pc doesnt already have 1 is this

although most, now come with these in. however, if the old pc is ide, and the new is sata.. then its not that easy.

I am sure i have some udma stuff lying around,but dont you need to connect it to power inside my pc as well,i am not too sure myself.:)
 
You could also use VNC to access it over your wifi network (if you have one)
Set the hard drives to share etc.. I do this with my media center PC.
It has no KB or mouse plugged into it. I just use VNC to login and do what I need to.
 
KVM would probably work for you As Paul said It would connect to both pc's and at the touch of a button you would have sight and control of the second PC or alternatively plug both into a router and set-up shares.

Software options for me isRADMIN much like VNC it has FTP to transfer files and you can have full control and hardly notice it is not a connected PC.

Depends on how close the two PC's would be for my choice. Wired connection always wins for me.
 
The 2 pc,s would be sitting side by side,no wireless,just wanted to see if i could connect both together really.:)

Connecting both together and having 1 keyboard/mouse/monitor control both machines is NOT the same thing!

Do you want to network the two machines together and share data between them or just have 2 PCs side by side and use one or the other without sharing the data? If it is the first, a decent router with DHCP server (you may already have this if you have an ASDL connection) with a couple of lengths of ethernet cable is the easiest. If it is the second, a KVM switch is what's required.

In which case you'll need a KVM switch.

Plug everything up, and on your keyboard to switch the monitor display between different PCs its normally scroll lock twice and then the up and down arrow. Brilliant things they are.

For your uses that sounds like a really convoluted way of doing things but hey ho... networking a PC that you want to share files off (for instance) is only really useful if you will be accessing those files from multiple other PCs from within the network - otherwise, you're just networking for networking's sake.

I do this at home: one machine is the file server, and two others access the files through network share, with the possibility of adding more computers at any one time - the data is stored centrally so it's still only one place to backup regardless of the amount of computers in the house.
