They have plenty to do with it - Rich is spot on with his theory there, hadnt actually thought of it until I read it. Makes sense. Some of the lack of opportunity will come from the families who do not want their daughters to go down this route.
Of course parental support is important for all young people in any field of endeavour.. But that is not related to the success of the English team.

When I was a boy I never, even once, kicked a football.
I went to schools that played rugby. we were banned from playing football, even at home.
Foot ball is not something that I even considered playing. Times change. and my old school now plays both. But I must admit with out much success in either now.
At school we played two hours sport of our choice every day except Sundays, I was not in the least deprived, by not playing football.
We had facilities for Rugby, cricket, Tennis, gymnastics, athletics, cross-country. swimming. squash, fives, hockey, boxing, fencing, and shooting.

To day I see no reason why boys and girls should play foot ball at every school, but provision should be available at a local level, as should all other sports.

.... Just because a family doesn't want something for their daughter (or son!) doesn't mean that the youngster won't overcome that hurdle. The movie 'Bend it like Beckham' [trailer in Reply #90] demonstrates an excellent example.

Hey! Who said Life had to be easy! People are stronger and better for having to overcome hurdles. Where there is a will there is a way and it is very evident in women's football - Check out the players' back stories.

The problem with "Bend it like Beckham", is that it is a movie and doesn't really have any bearing on what happens in the real World. A girl in certain Asian communities will not be allowed to socialise outside heir immediate family and they can't just sneak away and go against the wishes of their family. When I played badminton all the Asian players were male. I have worked with Asian women and it was noticeable that hardly any would socialise outside of work.
I also made the point in an earlier post, that Black and Asian girls outperform the boys acamically, so may be more career focussed at an earlier age.
The average women's super league player is paid £47K a year, compare that to Christianio Ronaldo's £400K a week.

.... Exactly the same school activities for me too. Football was frowned on as too working class. English Public School education, eh?

When I first read reports of ethnicity being being brought into this I was shocked that after an 8-0 win that was what the "white" presenter wanted to talk about.

I'm not shocked that it's appeared in this thread, usual suspects and all.

There was a news article today about segregating school children and I do think people need to be careful where they take this because that's where this seems to be where some people seem to want to be heading but balanced against that there's the story of the worker who won her case and got thousands in compo over what her inclusion officer insisted must be the case.

Other than all that distraction and division.
I've been watching women's footie for some time and was really stressed but really pleased with the performance and result :D

I played Sunday football over Hackney Marshes, sliding tackle might mean mean dog s*** legs.
Soon learnt to tap the ball in if the goal was one that backed onto the factories outfall.
Last person to kick it got the ball back, scramble down the coke clinker hill and into the Orange steaming water.
Back down the pub for a few beers and roast spuds then a kip before Sunday night pints until closing at half ten

Rugby was a game for posh irons, footie or nothing for us, time of our lives.

This thread was my way of saying Well done England ladies team, you have done what NO mens senior team in winning something since 1966.
I thought this thread had just about run it's course after my post yesterday and said so. Just logged on to see yet another twist. The mind boggles..

Hasn't it just Dave? It's a shame, a thread that should've been a celebration has delved to the depths, yet again and has also drifted off topic.

Can we all get back in order now? Play nice. :police:

...and on cue just 17 minutes later TerryWp keeps the ball rolling...

Dale.. You need to try again but this time use capital letters and for good measure, in bold and maybe use the written form of shouting,..multiple...... !!!! Or alternatively, quite simply close it down.

Who'd be a Mod ?
