Yes
The Greater Manchester 'C' is not going ahead.

What happens next.

Bus/train fares will rocket more punters on the roads, then all the 'No' voters will be saying 'I am one of the few who voted yes'

I don't know if I am for it or against it as I don't use public transport that much and in my line of work if I have to use the congestion charge I would just add it to the bill.

Biggest reason I see why it was not passed is that the area was too big.

BBC Have Your Say said:
I am delighted with this news. Here is why:

Buses - Operated by independent profit making companies, who should pay for their own buses and routes
Trains - Operated by independent profit making companies, who should pay for their own new trains and services
Metrolink - Operated by independent profit making companies, who should pay for their own new trains and services

There were no real plans to improve the road network

:agree:

wow, that must be the only message anyone has ever left on BBC HYS that doesnt blame a) immigrants b) people on benefits or c) gordon brown

must have taken ages to find it :)

I think it's fair to blame Gordon Brown for EVERY woe in the world.

Whilst I agree with the principals of congestion charging to improve public transport, the proposals were far too weak and poorly presented to ever have withstood a chance of winning.

Having been born and raised in Greater Manchester I always felt I had a strong connection with the city and everyone who lives here...but today, for some reason, when I read it was a No vote I felt those ties severed.

Not perhaps because it was a no vote, that I can agree with in the circumstances, but less than half the population could be bothered to spend 5 minutes voting in the biggest decision the region has faced in living memory. People didn't even have to go to a polling station, it could be done from the comfort of their own homes.

I've never been proud to be British/English as such, but I've always been a proud Mancunian but I feel today that's been somewhat dented.

A sad day for the city.

Improvement of public transport - Awesome
Paying for it by levying road users who already fork out for the privelidge - Plain wrong.

and as for increased ticket fairs and whatnot, its still cheaper than running a vehicle, so sit down and shut up, or walk.

We had a perfectly fine transport system sold from underneath us to private companies who *******ised it and ran it into the ground in the name of pure profit, with no thought to the actual infrastructure they were destroying.

And now we're asked to pay for it again?

No thanks, let the private companies invest in their own bloody vehicles.

I believe the answer to congestion is congestion!!!!!

Why should rich folk drive about the roads while single parents, old folks and poorly paid workers wonder if they can afford to go out. At least now everyone sits in tailbacks regardless of money. Seems fair to me and if you don't like the congestion use the train or have bus lanes :)

Privatisation was the start of the rot.

You cant have cheap priced services and keep the investors happy at the same time.

Bus operators DONT pick their own routes, its the Manchester Executive.

I'd have voted YES if i thought things would improve for me, but i dont believe the waffle the politicians dish out.

Eh?

People why pay taxes will never vote for more taxes.

if we felt fairly taxed then maybe but when they bring bloody stupid ideas in like making someone that bought a jaguar 7 years ago pay £450 in road tax because it's not green the people will never be on their side.

I fully expect this to be the last time people are asked if they want a congestion charge, the government will just introduce it next time

They do
There are some routes which are tendered. IE designed by the PTE, and put out to tender, then operated by a bus company.

The rest are purely private.

Frank - if you are reading this...Re my thread from yesterday, page 2 of the M.E.N today showed a photo of a Salford councillor celebrating the results...bingo wings and all ;)
