been looking to by a hoya pro 1 nd filter but am getting a bit confused by the different codes on the packaging
between a ndx64 and a ndx8 so can some one tell me which one is nearest to a 10 stop please

the ndx64 reduces light by 6-stops, while the nd8 reduces by 3-stops. If you want 10-stops you want the NDx400.
 
thanks for the info all these different codes are confusing ...the chap in the shop obviously gave me the wrong info i asked him for a ten stop and he offered me the ndx64 and said it was 8 stop......which was obviously wrong....the 2 shops i went in tried to get me to by a hama variable nd filter

You could buy online from Amazon, Wex or any other retailer. Just make sure you buy an NDx400 in the right size for your lens. Be aware that they are pricey. There are a couple of recent threads here on TP which are discussing cheaper alternatives, one I which I recently bought. Some customers understand the maths.. .. ;)

2 - 4 - 8 - 16 - 32 - 64
1/2 - 1/4 - 1/8 - 1/16 - 1/32 / - 1/64

1/64 light transmission is the same as 6-stops of light reduction.
 
Nd400 is about 8.2/3 stops isn't it ? Nd1000 ( or 1024 ) is 10 stops

Yes, my mistake. The ND400 is 9-stops, the ND1000 is 10-stops.
 
the nd 400 will be fine .....the chap in the shop said that the ndx64 was 8 stop and turned out to be 6 so i'm glad i checked first

Also optical density is often used: 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 etc are one, two, three stops, and so on. 1.8 is six stops and 3.0 is ten stops.
