So thanks to Petemo I have recently acquired a 5D mkii to do it some justice I really need a nice bit of glass to put on the front.

I love my 70-200L tele but I need something in the 24+ range.

My budget is about £900 at a push.

I have briefly played with both the canon 24-70 2.8 L USM mki and the tamron equivalent but not at the same time.

My photos is usually whatever I can get my hands on, I am not a commercial photographer but I get asked to do things for friends or clubs.
This month:
  • Nightclub
  • Ski shot
  • macro shot
  • portrait
  • creative

I can't decide on what glass I want to keep on this camera. Both canon and tamron have their strengths and weaknesses on the other hand the tamron is slightly cheaper then a brand new canon.

:help:

TIA.

Why havent you considered the Sigma out of interest it's the one I'm looking at is the Tamron thought to be superior?

+1 for the Sigma

I actually enjoyed mine apart from the push/pull clutch type system for auto/manual focus. Eventually ended up with the Canon and never had issues with IQ. Pretty much wide open use this its life.

Never tested the Tamron.

I got a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 USM for my birthday and I use it regularly on my 5D3 and more recently my 7D. I'm getting some great results with it specially with the 5D3. The 24 end does seem a bit odd on the 7d as I'm not really used to using that FL very often but the IQ is great.

Sigma is definitely the worst of the three. Tamron can be Ok, but there are tons of poor build quality reports - second lens element falls out. That's pretty bad. I have to say go and get Canon mk1 after testing it out in person or cough up for mkII.

see the-digital-picture ISO crops for comparison. Sigma looks pretty shocking and tamron is lacking contrast
