Well, maybe you lack people skills, in which case you either need to do something else or learn them!

There isn't a lot of info in your post but I'm guessing that you're talking about glamour models here, and that you're also talking inexperienced wannabe models who don't know about posing.

A couple of suggestions:
1. Don't work with inexperienced models unless you know enough about the whole job to make up for what they don't know. Personally I will occasionally work with new models, but only because I know how to. I prefer to work with very experienced people, they're worth their cost and in your case you can learn a lot from them. The ones I won't touch with a bargepole are the ones with a bit of experience but not enough to be useful, because generally they've only been photographed by bad photographers, they haven't learned anything useful and have picked up nothing but bad habits and stupid poses.
2. Don't tell a model how to pose, just explain what you want and what you want her to think/feel. She should then be able to adopt a posture/position that suits the mood you're looking for, and she won't try to do anything that she can't do.

Look at some books/mags to get an idea beforehand of what poses you want. Also know your camera and lights inside out so that you don't have to concentrate on fiddling with the settings.
It will come with time and confidence.

Hi Mark,

Some newer models may be very nervous and it's a good idea to have the first 15-20 mins just chatting to them, making them feel comfortable and explaining what the shoot is about and what you are looking for. Explain that you want them to act naturally, as the camera can see 'false' expressions and awkward poses. Those initial chats can help the newer models to relax and the results should be better.

Starting out paying for models with experience will certainly get you good results with model poses, but building your own way of getting the best poses with newer models on Time for Prints basis only comes with time. Be patient and as Cris says, look at lots of photographs, and plan out what you want from the models and the way you want them to pose ...... show them the photos of what you want.

You should also go along to one of the subsidised Lencarta studio lighting courses and that would help you to understand more. Good luck

Mark you are not that far from Bradford, i would definately agree with Alexam about the training courses in Bradford being worth the trip. Also, try get along to a local area meet up, they are a great way to learn and very friendly too.

Southport is one of my favorite parts of the country, you should be able to get a nice set up there.

Get yourself into the meeting place forum, you'll soon meet some good people in there.
