the past few home shoots i have done have raised a bit of a problem with my 5D i seem to be having problems with it steaming up when starting the shoot, it's so bad that i am now having to warm the camera with a hairdryer before starting, anybody else have this trouble ? never used to get it with my 1D !, thought it was the lens at first but it's defo the camera

Store it with a few of those silica gel packs.

or if you don't have any silica gel easy cook rice/rice will go part of the way to helping

but aye, silica gel :)

My lens also steams up when I get back indoors from a cold shoot, I'm guessing silica gel would help with this problem too?

Unless the camera is stored in an airtight container then silica gel will make no difference as it'll just draw moisture from the atmosphere until it gets saturated...

Try storing the camera properly (i.e. in a not-too-cold, not-too-warm, but DRY Place) in the first place and keeping it at the same temperature and humidity as the place you'll be shooting in at least an hour before the shoot happens.

In the Arctic, we (I got this from the Royal Navy Phots who accompany the Royal Marines to Norway) keep camera equipment stored in locked Peli-Cases outside of the living-areas, so they're always at outdoor temperatures. Only the batteries and computers kit comes indoors.

In less hostile environments, make sure you put your cameras away in their camera bags before you come indoors then leave at least two hours before opening the bag so the kit gradually comes up to room temperature - it's sudden changes in temperature and humidity that causes the problems.

:agree:

points taken chaps, i can't see models of today letting me turn up a couple of hours before a shoot to warm the camera up though :naughty: guess i'll just have to stick to the hairdryer then

Same happened vto me in the Maldives on hols where the room was cold (air con) but outside it was hot with high humidity. Solved the problem by putting the camera bag outside on our balcony for 15 mins to warm up in the sun. Another trick was to put the camera on a table outside and cover with a cloth until it warmed up. Are you storing the camera in a cold place?

Why is the kit getting so cold? Don't you have a heater in the car or something?
