Im going to see Tenacious D on Friday at the NEC/NIA (I forget which), I'm REALLY excited as I'm a concert virgin for starters and the band rocks! :lol: :D (plus I have NO idea what to expect!)
I want to take my 350D with me to take some pitures of the evening, but what the best way to take photo's (if you can) has anyone got any advice? I have two lenses the 18-55 K/L and 55-200. I assume the 55-200 would be the lens of choice?

I dont want to put a downer on this, but I would recommend you make sure your allowed your camera (if your taking it), because alot will shake you down at the door to prevent you taking camera gear in - just to save you being refused entry.

(If you already have permission then ignore the above).


You will probably need your 55-200 as little will happen close enough for the 18-55.

Also you will probably have to set the ISO at 800, maybe higher and have your lens at its widest aperture.

Also shoot in RAW, it will make adjustments to white balance easier.

Basic advice, but all I have Im afraid :)
 
I'd check if you are going to be allowed in with the camera first!

The bigger concerts always have stewards looking to confiscate anything they think is a good camera. Little point and shoot cameras normally get ignored. When I've had my 20D at a concert I've kept it down at first when I could be seen easily. After a while the stewards seem to give up :)

Check the back of your tickets. The Robbie Williams ones stated no professional camera equuipment.

Enjoy the gig, whatever!
 
Most gigs will say "No pro equipment." Buy an Ixus :D
 
It depends on the promoters and venues. Mostly its the venues, as they don't want to be done for breach of contract / copyright.
Take a digital compact, we ignore them generally. As most stewards / security really only class SLR type as professional. Bands / artists personel security can be a bit over anal at times even with compacts, I have had ones grab the camera from some poor sod and take their memory card out and it takes a good bit of persuading to get the card back for the person. Mind you we have been told to ****** when telling somepeople just to go away from the barrier if they want to avoid problems.

What every you decide take care with your kit and enjoy yourself.
 
They tend to be very strict a the large arena type venues. Years ago I saw a couple of young girls thrown out of Preston Guild Hall for taking photos.

I've been to dozens of gigs in my time, and tend to find that if you take a DSLR you spend to much time with the camera and not listening or watching the gig. A point and shoot is fine for the snap shots to remember the gig, but I tend only to go to the smaller venues.

To be honest if this is your first ever gig I'd leave the camera at home and just enjoy the concert.

Oh keep your ticket you'll soon have a nice collection as mementos. I've got a batch of mine framed on the wall :lol: , but have not got my early gigs as I tossed the tickets :'(
 
leave it at home, your a gig goer, not a photographer,, your there to watch a band, you'll either get your gear confiscated, get kicked out or not let in at all and you dont want that. add that to the fact that in a large auditorium such as the NEC you'll be standing, you'll get knocked around by the crowd and your shots wont come out, you'd need such long shutter speeds that the shots wont come out unless you use a tripod and even then the artists will be blurred


sounds harsh but its the sad truth, your a punter, do what punters do and leave the gear at home, the only way to get to photograph a major band is with a photopass usually gained via either a connection with the band (unlikely) or by a connection with the press (i.e music mag, newspaper)
 
I called up to see about taking my camera to a gig i went to earlier this year, they told me no cameras at all so i left it at home. Got there and people where wipping out DSLR's and professional looking video cameras - i was very suprised but not that fussed i missed out on taking mine as i had a good night.

If they do confiscate im sure you will get it back at the end of the night so i wouldnt worry too much.

BTW this isnt the greatest post in the world, this is just a tribute ;)
 
I asked my mate who has the tickets and they do say 'no photographic professional equipment'. But whitwwash and a few others are right, I should go to enjoy the band! If I want pics of the band then I'll se the offical ones... my memories will serve me better than a image on a hard drive! :D (providing I dont get altzimers! :(

I'll post again on sat evening to say how it went... being my first concert an all! :thumbs: WOO HOO i cant wait!!! :naughty:
