Should fly. Only thing will be which version of Vista, if it's 32 bit you'll only be able to use about 3gb of the ram.

That'll do nicely! Could also cut back significantly if image processing is the only requirement, but this set-up is about as "future-proofed" as a pc can be.

That's a beast of a PC! Is that custom made or from a manufacturer like Dell or HP?

That's basically exactly the same as my PC except it has the nVidia 9600GT and mine has the 8800GT.

You will be able to run any game ultra high settings on that computer :)

Bit extravagant if you're just looking to process images though...

I'm not sure you can have too much power for processing images. Open a 50mb image (not uncommon these days) duplicate the layer and it becomes a 100mb image. Add a mask and anything else which happens to be in the clipboard at the time, and the system is groaning at the seams or giving up altogether.

1000GB / 1TB on 1 disk is insane! I would prefer to have 250GB for OS / Apps, a further 750GB for files etc

Anyone else put all their data on 1 drive?

If you stick wings in there aswell it will FLY off :P

Good to go if you have the money i say

Not a chance! I've had 2 hard drives fail in the past month! Have my stuff spread over 3 drives plus DVD/CD backups...

A great partner for that PC setup would be the 1TB MyBook... a lovely piece of kit and only £150 in PC World at the moment...

I have all my data backed up on a Maxtor

500GB i think it was

Nice spec but for Vista. I cannot recommend this OS and the local PC shop is regularly "downgrading" people to XP as they give up on trying to get Vista to do things. Hopefully SP1 fixes a lot of these glitches. Meanwhile, for fotaes, I am happy with my Mac. :D

If Dell it will probably just work however.

What price are you being quoted for this?

Re hard drives, bear in mind that having two disks will halve your MTBF by definition. I'm not disagreeing its a sensible idea, but the machine will be less reliable statistically.

Obviously a USB or LAN backup solution (Windows Home Server for example) is a very good idea.

Also very interested in price. I use Vista at work and its very fast, as is image editing,. I think the dual core CPUs are a must.

At home I run Vista on a very high spec Laptop (no dual core though), and image editing CRAWLS.

Gary.

Me, always have, but I have a backup disc that does hourly backups.

1000w PSU? That will be like running an electric fire all day......

Sounds like a great pc though

Allan

That's one hell of a machine!

Where's it coming from and (roughly) how much is it costing for that spec?

Think that changed with sp1. My system shows as 4gb now it has SP1. Guess it could be that it can only use 3... but it shows as 4Gb in control panel >system.

edit: Oh and Vista has been a royal PITA but as I'm getting to know a bit more about it, it does not seem so bad now.

saw a sig somewhere that read 'ask not what vista can do for you, but what you can buy for Vista' which struck a note with me as my sound card does not work properly with vista so i may have to buy a soundcard... or use the onboard instead.

If its only for image editing I'd drop the high end graphics card & fit two lower spec cards. I'm not certain but it would probably give you better performance when running two monitors.

and remember and get yourself a good mouse.

Megabucks PC + Cheapo mouse = fail :D

Its actually a Mesh machine but with a few extra's, and they quote about £1800, but I can get it for about £1100. I have 2Tb external drives already for back up as well as DVD backups too. I'm trying to make it future proof as its a fair chunk of money. My current machine will be stripped and used for web and music only, leaving this toy for editing and the like.

To be honest, I'm not fussed about vista, Xp works for me but again on the future proof thing...

What do you think I could cut back on leaving editing performance unaffected ?

Cheers for the input guys

Ps: The Kb and mouse set up I have now is pretty cool ;)

For £1,100 I'd grab it even if it's to re-sell;

make a profit
use some of this to buy a more suitable computer for photography
spend the rest on lenses

:)

I have twin monitors now. 2 the same would be nice but i have an old Iiyama 19" and a newish Dell 2407 24". I find it is not a problem as I tend to have something unimportant on one screen and work on the main one. Just wondering if sharing the budget equally on the monitors is the best way.

Is that a blu ray drive and a DVd drive? If so why as the BR drive reads and writes DVDs. Don't see the point in lightscribe. Thought the memory would be ddr2 800 not 667 - not that i know enough to be sure 800 is better.

Dell 24" and a Sony 22" here the dell is a cracker

Don't know that much about pootas but I reckon that won't need Red Bull ... ... and for that money it would be rude not too ... :suspect:

Go for it Kris ... ;)
