I'm looking to get a new computer, I currently have a old style iMac and HP laptop I prefer computers rather than Apple computers! Which ones would be best? I use photoshop a lot so I want something that's quick for this as i don't want to wait ages for images to load or for changes to be made.

Any help would

Budget?

You might find answers better in the computer section at the bottom of the forum.

Your budget is the biggest factor here. You want a full desktop, or a laptop, or a compact PC/all-in-one type machine?

Hi I haven't got a budget to be honest but don't want to spend LOADS :) ideally looking for all in one pc as not got a lot of space
Thanks

Right. You want:

  • Quick: you need a good processor, 8G of memory (for Photoshop) and a fast disk
  • Compact
  • "cheap"

Have a look here: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/all-in-one-pcs/706_7023_70023_0_xx/1_12/price-asc/xx-criteria.html and let us know where your cost criteria becomes overriding (i.e., I know you'd like to pay for the cheapest, but where, realistically, will you stretch to) and then we can tell you if it'll run Photoshop quickly.

You can then make the decision if you want to compromise all-in-one for some cost and better performance (tower systems tend to give you best bang-for-buck).

I'm curious KellyAnne, when you say old style iMac, which type are you referring to?
Does other criteria enter into the equation - iTunes/iPhone/iPod/Apple TV?
If you've not really looked at an iMac in many a year, then you should at least do so, to be sure you're ruling it out for the correct reasons.
Lastly, if you've no qualms about buying pre-owned, that's an option, but like for like, iMacs won't be all that more expensive, and will hold their value more, down the line.

Hi regards to old Imac it's about 6 years old at least! We got it second hand a couple years ago, i just prefer Pc's mainly cause there cheaper and I know my way around them more, and software is cheaper for pc than macs.

I have iTunes, iPad, iPod & iPhone

Thanks

I know these days u get what u pay for, but ideally don't want to spend more than £600 if I can help it. I'm not fussed on make as long it's one if need any parts or service people know how to do it and I don't need to order parts from 1000's miles away

Thanks

OK.

In which case, I'd avoid an all-in-one as they tend to be like laptops and are more difficult to fix. If it were me, at that budget I'd go for something like:

http://www.ebuyer.com/411064-zoostorm-desktop-pc-7873-0446

or

http://www.ebuyer.com/395297-zoostorm-desktop-pc-7873-0436

depending on whether you want windows 7 or 8. Both of those have a nice fast processor, decent memory and a big disk. Not massively expandable, but standard PC parts that you can swap if you need to. Zoostorm are e-buyers own brand of PC (I buy a lot of stuff from e-buyer so don't be worried if you've not heard of them before) and are aimed at businesses. They are towards the no frills end of the market, but you do get a lot of PC for the money (these will be quite a bit faster than the all-in-ones - even at £600). Something similar from one of the known "build me a PC" specialists (Novatech, Chillblast) is going to cost another £70 at least. See: http://www.novatech.co.uk/pc/range/novatechlifenti29.html the £400 price is WITHOUT AN OPERATING SYSTEM)

Then buy a decent monitor (you WILL notice the difference between these and a cheap monitor for photography). Something like:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-24-i...lver-1-year-warranty-/200884495734#vi-content at £179

(there are a number of people who have bought from nrg_it on here and been happy). If you want the same thing but new, it is available here:

http://www.cclonline.com/product/65...arp-U2412M-24-Widescreen-LED-Monitor/MON0494/

for £215

You will be surprised at how much quicker these are than a 6+ year old Mac....
