Yes
If I leave my pc idle for more than about 10 mins, when I come back to it it sounds like its doing overtime with lots of whirring and running very slow.
When I try to close it down, I get a box saying that the programme ccSvcHst is still running.
Does anyone know what this programme is and how can I turn it off.
The pc is running windows XP and Norton software.

Mick.

Yup

Bin Norton and put something decent on it. Chances are Norton is trying to scan something.

Norton 360 certainly is like puting square wheels on your car.

Get Kaspersky, AVG is good but you get what you don't pay for.

I do use AVG on some machines but have been hit by the off trojan in the past.

Also think of the heat we are having.

Remove the side of the case, clean any debris / dust from the CPU cooling fan

Also goto Start - Run and type %temp% and delete all the files and do the same for &tmp%

why not just get CCleaner it do it all for you in a click and clean your Reg as well

Probably Norton causing the issues, try disabling it before you bin it just in case it isn't, Check HD for Disc space you would be surprised how quick they fill up, defrag your drive, delete any thing in your temp folder. BUY some more memory.
If it does turn out to be Norton causing your issues check on line for Norton removal tools as a normal uninstall will not remove all of the program.
Maybe think about buying a USB drive to store all your photos, music etc freeing up space on the c:drive

Thanks for the replies. I turned Norton idle time scan off a while ago and it has made no difference.
I also use ccleaner about once every week in an attempt to sort out the problem, that has not helped either.

Once or twice a year I wipe and reinstall windows on my pc, it gets rid of an awful lot of crap that builds up on the hard drive.

This, when was the last time you did a full reinstall ?

my money is on norton, uninstall it and try a free AV program like avast or microsoft security essentials.

there shouldnt be any need to reinstall windows unless youre installing and uninstalling programs all over the shop and CCleaner will take care of most of those issues anyway.

as above also check your free disk space, if its under 10% thatll slow you down too.

My free disc space is 123gb which is 41% of capacity. I have never reinstalled windows as I think that could get messy with my knowledge of computers.
I have done a disk defrag which took forever and hung at 48% complete for ages so I stopped it.

id maybe try a chkdsk then to check the integrity of the hard drive..

click start->run and type in:

cmd (click ok)

in the black box type:

chkdsk c: /r (press return)

if asked to schedule on next reboot chose yes and restart the computer. it will do a check on startup.

If your running xp, vista or windows 7 then this is what is called indexing the drives. Here, the system is attempting to check the drives for any changes you have made when it is not being used, and index them again and again. I had this and you can do something about it:

To turn off indexing:

1. Open up "My Computer."
2. Right-click on your hard drive (usually "C:") and choose "Properties."
3. Uncheck the box at the bottom that reads "Allow Indexing Service to..."
4. Click OK, and files will be removed from memory. This removal may take a few minutes to complete.

To disable the indexing service:

1. In the "Start" menu, choose "Run."
2. Type "services.msc" and press Enter.
3. Scroll-down to "Indexing Service" and double-click it.
4. If the service status is "Running", then stop it by pressing the "Stop" button.
5. To make sure this service doesn't run again, under "Startup Type:", choose "Disabled."

I hope this helps.

although disabling indexing will hamper searches, especially if you search within files.

plus it shouldnt be indexing all of the time, unless youre constantly changing/adding files.
