My computer dvd/cd player was slow to play anything so time to have a dig about to find out what was wrong. My "c" drive which the computer starts up with is an SSD 250 gig hard drive but I noticed it only had 29gig free space left.Strange thought I as there wasn't that amount on it and all my videos and photos are on secondary hard drive anyway.

I tried everything but I did notice Bitdefender antivirus scanned the CD/DVD drive every time I inserted one of my own discs, something I didn't want but the program doesn't allow that to be ignored. although it can be stopped from scanning. But who want to do that scanning stop every time a disc is inserted before you can play the CD/DVD? I don't so removed Bitdefender from the computer. Not much changed however, have to say at this point I carried out the obvious-Malware /virus check-defrag- msconfig- etc etc and nothing showed up and still only had 29 gig left on the SSD "C" drive. Something definately was not right so only one answer, format the SSD "c"drive and wipe everything, EXCEPT you can't format the "C" drive as it is the operating drive for the computer.

Now this is where I was crafty.

On yet another hard drive not being used and not connected to the computer but kept inside the computer case has another copy of Windows 7 on it. So here is the crafty bit, I swapped the SSD "C" drive physically inside the computer and made the unconnected one as the "C" drive instead.

Right now powering up again the previously disconnected drive (now drive C) was the computer startup hard drive and the SSD hard drive a secondary drive.

Now as mentioned before one can't format a C drive but you can format secondary drives which the SSD hard drive now was. So formatted the SSD Hard drive and completely wiped everything off.

Next was to make the SSD hard drive the primary "C" drive again, but this time on its own with no other drives installed, it might just detect what was on any other installed hard drive.

By playing the Windows disc in the CD/DVD windows was restored to the SSD hard drive then all the other discs that came with the computer had to be added.

Result out of the 250 gig SSD hard drive I now have about 210 gig spare on it and cured the initial problems as well, ie CD/DVD pays almost instantly -shut down about 7 seconds without having to go into the register to shortcut anything.

I honestly don't have a clue what was wrong but cured the problem, ok it took in all about 5+ hours to do the above. As I said I tried absolutely everything electronically one could try but in the end it came down to doing a physical swap of hard drives.

So maybe a tip if you have a backup hard drive, keep a copy of you windows on it and do the above if you run into unfathomable problems.

Oh forgot to mention did a search on the net for anyone else with similar problems. ie as above or slow shut down/start up etc etc.It appears it is quite common with widows 7. Some even have contacted Microsoft engineers who from what I have read don't have a clue either but are working on it according to one reply 2 years ago.

Glad you got it sorted Bazza, tbh I have had win 7 running on this shed of mine and had no probs with start up or shutdown. Computers aint clever, they just think they are ;) Gonna satart a pc thread of my own now
