Not posted much on this thread so thought it about time.
Not many months ago I decided to have build a new computer built and as my son is into all that we did a joint effort (actually he did the build). My spec was for it to be specifically for photographic work not general do all and everything.
So after 3 months of research we hand picked the parts and kept changing our minds from day to day for the best within a price bracket. Eventually completed the build with a new IPS monitor and all. Since then added more RAM and second hard drive.
So now get Windows7 professional 16 gig RAM 2 hard drives 1/1.5 TB build cost around £1300.
That is a rough background
now to the problem and resolve bit.
Problem by now the computer was taking anywhere up to 4 minutes to shut down. Did all the normal checked like virus-Malware -Trogan- CC cleaner- defragged it etc etc but nothing showed up. Got fed up with the wait so purchased an SSD card (250GIG samsung). On the disk that came with it it "claimed" one could clone from hard disk drive "C" direct onto it. will I tried several times went right through to 99% and the last 1% failed, said something about not recognising Disk fragmentation or something but didn't say which disk drive.
So decided to do a clean build from scratch on the SSD card, and definately should have done that in the first place shutdown time around 12 seconds.
First problem over come after adding all the bits and pieces, oh the usb3 ports had to be added from the motherboard (ASUS P8Z77-V) disc way deep in the menu setup twice with that motherboard and the computer case I bought, so watch out for that.
One of the 2 front computer case fans gave a jerk but wouldn't start spinning except with a helping hand, no idea how long it had been like that, tried swapping connectors leads to no avail, so put back original 140mm case fans as a temp measure and just ordered some better fans "hopefully" well they are costing double the price of the upgraded fans we bought when doing the build.
So now computer is ok and waiting for new case fans to come on Monday with 1000 rpm so should cool it down a bit more.
Conclusion
Huge advantage in doing ones own computer build, you know the parts cost and quality. Load cheaper that shop bought ones with unwanted extras like games and trial this and that. Avoids build costs which you have to pay for in the purchase price. Also to add replace upgrade you know exactly how and what to do. If a shop did the build with same parts it would be almost double the price that we did it for.
SSD cards yes are expensive against a "normal " hard drive but so much faster and well worth the cost in my opinion. All my pictures/videos I am storing on a second ordinary hard drive leaving the SSD card to do the bulk of what computers do best.
Hope this is of at least some interest incase anyone is thinking of doing their own computer build.
By the way kept the old "C" drive incase I need to go back to it as it has everything on it but hope not, its just a backup
