Something odd has just now happened to my account on the PC.

Obviously a fake / hoax etc... however

screen comes up with

"This computer has been locked" - all copied pics of Met police logo

and either I've been downloading

illegal p0rn
doddy music / films etc

however if I send £100 in UKash vouchers - enter cc details here to get the voucher code (yeah right) it will be unlocked.

Obviously a phishing scam etc - how do I get rid of the screen, and I do not appear to be able to do much with my "Lynton" account until I get rid of it.

yes ran that -

at the moment I have completed a system restore. Which seems to be working - however I imagine it will go again.

It sounds like your PC acquired the Metropolitan Police version of the Ukash ransomware nasty.

It might be worth checking the net for the best way to deal with it, although it does appear that Malwarebytes gets rid of it..

Lots of these nasties hide themselves in the system restore area as it is a protected area of your hard disk.

This means that often security software will be ineffectual because the nasty will just keep resurrecting its self from the protected system restore area of your hard drive.

This is why a lot of security software will tell you to turn off your system restore before you attempt to remove a nasty.

Also if you are infected it is always best to run an on line virus scan and not trust the software on your computer

Point taken and understood, but if that is the case can yuo suggest as to what I need to do?

I removed this from my daughters computer a few weeks ago. She was in France and I did it by phone.

The virus doesn't infect the system restore area, it was just starting a program at boot time that took over the login. The trick was to disable it using msconfig in safe mode (run->msconfig->startup and disable the program that is a random set of characters from memory) and then delete the file.

Most malware that is after money isn't particularly devious. It doesn't normally bury itself deep in the computer to resurrect itself at a later time (and if it does bury itself in the system restore a virus scan finds it and removes it anyway) - the "scam" is done when you pay for it to be unlocked the first time. Just like real life viruses, there are a few that are nasty, but generally you can get rid of them quite easily - generally by stopping them running and deleting the exe file.

Normally you aren't the first one to see them, and someone, somewhere has documented how to get rid of them.

Cheers - I just restored from the 18th and all seems fine so far.

I think there was some FBI version of this cutting about as well.

Damn, I'll have to find another way to get hold of the Lynton estate. I'd have gotten away with it if it wasn't for you pesky kids...
