Hi all,

I have obviously clicked on a link that has taken me to a virus-ed up website. and has preformed a drive-by virus on my computer.

And just now I have clicked on something by accident another pop-up saying should I get this anti-virus software, which I know windows doesnt give pop-ups for.

If anyone has any knowledge of re-installing computers and fixing them up etc. could you be of any help.

I have the windows xp home disc aswell. I just cant afford to be Bo***ked by my parents again for clicking on something I shouldnt have

Another update.. "Windows" has turned off the automatic updates. Is this bad or not.

Well I would love some help... and quick(sorry if I am sounding rude but this is quite important for me to fix)

Thanks in advance

Jordie

Thanks Del. I have AVG 8.0 and im scanning the computer now.

But its just getting worse and worse. I might try and re-installing windows, but im gunna email some colleuges from my school (when I say colleuges I mean people I worked with on work experiance) But does this completley remove everything?

Open Task manager and see if anything is running at 100% (CPU) if so,have a look and see whats running flat out, copy the name and Google to see if its a viruse and if so google for a remove tool........

Housecall should get rid of the nastie.....

I cant get onto the task manager cos its been disabled by the admin. Which I am the admin

So I am just gunna re install windows

My sister had this last night and I got rid of it fairly easily.

Run AVG8, spybot search and destroy and malwarebytes. These programmes will get rid of it easily.

There's a lot of viruses on the go just now..

You might want to start in safe mode and try to disable any services and startup entries that look like viruses.. also remove any IE addons that you aren't using or looks suspicious.

You can do windows repairs etc but they don't always get rid of viruses.. remember if you totally wipe windows you will need to set up all the user accounts, printers etc again.. sometimes you are better to try and fix a problem without reinstalling.

Thanks for the help guys but it completly b***ered my machine, so I took it into my school today and there going to flash the hard drive and then re install it.

So I should be up and running again by next week

Thanks again

Flash the hard drive?

Hi thanks for all your help everyone.

Just one question. How would you go about flashing the hard drive, as that was suggested to me last night, when I went to ask for help

never heard of that one.

Total erase and format yes, Flash implies modifying the contents of an internal chip which would be pointless

I think that one belongs with formatting your ram, someone was having you on m8.

You can't flash you're hard drive (well, technically you can but you wouldn't ever need to and it wouldn't help you here anyway).

Jordie - Ive already mentioned how to fix the virus - My sister had the same thing you do, all you have to do is run AVG 8, spybot search and destroy and Malware bytes. Also the virus has probably put on your desktop about 3 internet links and changed their icons.. they will be the names of anti virus' - just delete them. It will take you about an hour to fix tops.

Regards, James

Looks like a good reason to have AV software installed from day one.

learn from your mistakes

Perhaps you should take steps to protect your machine and then you won't have another virus?

Anthony.

Have something running (I always recommend Avast Home - it's free, and good) in the background, and most of all, and I say this to anyone reading...

USE FIREFOX!

Firefox, and a couple of it's Add-ons, No-Script and AdBlock Plus.

No-Script said:
It allows JavaScript, Java and other executable content to run only from trusted domains of your choice, e.g. your home-banking web site, and guards the "trust boundaries" against cross-site scripting attacks (XSS).

AdBlock Plus said:
Ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page? Install Adblock Plus now and get rid of them.

Never heard of flashing the hard drive, its a new one to me:thinking:

The only thing iv flashed:suspect: was the Bios so that i could install Vista but since doing so iv gone back to XP.

Jordie.......a juicy red apple is nice But not every apple is red....... so be careful what your clicking on when your bored/surfing the web,you can pick up all kinds of nasties.

And take reddeathdrinker's advise......

Del.

I use Firefox all the time, wouldn't have it anyway else.

And I hate Macs. (WINDOWS!!!!! Even though there Virus prone.)

But I will take you up on the add-ons for FF.
