well had a "bug " get into my computer saying it wasn't activated and to press activate now button to register Windows 7. if not the computer would go blank for a few seconds.
So I looked this problem on the net and some said it was genuine and other saying it was fake as I knew mine was genuine anyway

Also had another couple of problems like not being able to backup or even access backup nor system restore would not work.
So about time I got it all sorted which required my main disk drive to be formatted. now you can't format a drive you are on, so while I was at it I added 4 more internal disk drives I had lying about

By swapping disks about I eventually got to be where I wanted with a clean disk. That is it in simple terms but actually a lot more work involved. So downloaded windows 7 onto it and had automatic activation which proves it is a genuine windows 7.

If you need to check yours it is easy

go to start then computer, right click and down to properties and you get something like this appear



Long the bottom there is your windows are activated you name and system ID number and bottom right a logo ( I have removed some of it for security reasons)

If that shows you have a genuine windows 7 program
 
so what was the issue?
and why have you spen all that time reinstallig W7?

its old, why are you not moving on?
 
Thi issue I arleady mentioned and it is nice to find out how to do things so I know for another time. I don't think an upgrade direct from W7 to W10 is not yet bug free and it cost to get W10 on Disc, the work I have done costs nothing and also a learning curve
But TY Mr B (paul) for asking. Remember when I went to school we used slde rules and windup watches, computer as we know them new wern't even invented or thought of. IT was not even a job back then

Nothing wrong with them, mine dates from the 70's and still wear it everyday, no batteries required, just a few shakes and it's wound up.

Well done sorting the computer out, I'm still on win 7 and not changing to 10 until I have to

W7 is for people who prefer the old style windows.
W8 and 10 are hated by many and they will hold on to W7 till it is no longer possible

It's still the fundamentally same design. Start menu etc. Just designed slightly more modern.

More fool the people hanging on to 7 when the security updates start drying up. Feature updates and fixes have already died.
 
The W10 interface can be tamed with extensions like Classic Shell. My main problem with it is the endless update cycle - not just essential security updates, but whatever they feel like including this month, over which the user has little or no control. Some of these make the machine unusable for an extended period (like the infamous 'Preparing to configure Windows' that may or may not have crashed - it can take so long it's hard to tell).
 
Well I must be lucky because I never did a single security update in 20 years of using the internet and no anti-virus and never had a problem lol.

And use W7 and Vista before that and XP. Must be a miracle

Good luck surviving the current spate of randsomeware hitting unpatched systems. I see another smbv1 encryption bug has started doing the rounds today. Seems pretty bad one.

It's certainly not clever running unpatched platforms at the moment. It's like driving around with no seatbelt, you'll only getaway with it for so long. Ms had the correct idea forcing updates on their latest platform.

Incidentally the 20 year boast isn't really that clever, I can't recall anyone running av on 3.1. I had "AIDS" on floppy disk way back, that's how seriously it was taken. Av for me personally was really only 98/2000 onward even then that was really only enterprise. These days it's less about av and more about malware hitting unpatched systems. It's not a good era to be in if you're running an obsolete and/or unpatched os.

especially in a few years that horse will be forced to drink the water and it will taste more bitter :-)
 
LOL I just went over to a MAC, hated the user interface on Windows 10 so thought to myself in for a penny in for a huge amount.

I still don't like Windows 10 but then again I come from the days of DOS6.22 and no graphic interface. My PC still runs Windows 7 but will slowly be phased out as I change more over to MAC. I've always been a lover of PC's and always will be but the fact that Micros***e constantly feel the need to update, change and generally mess about with the operating system started to really bug me. Theres been too many changes over the last few years from XP onwards. The operating systems where never the real problem it was to my mind always the lack of fully testing and finding the holes before selling that was the problem.

Whilst I think the MAC is far from perfect at least I'm not constantly paying through the nose for a new operating system every year or two. I get mine updated for free when and if it needs it.

yeah but that was only announced in 2013 from apple its not exactly an historic thing.
when you think microsoft offerered the W10 upgrade free in 2015 apple were just hedginging their bets.
the fact that people didn't take the FREE upgrade is up to them, it will cost them serious coin in a few years.

also the fact apple charge twice as much for what is the same hardware in most average laptops you are hardly getting a bargain.

Because there wasn't uproar when apple changed their os design..

if anything ms are being responsible in pushing security updates in 10. With *nix platforms seeing malware hits how long will it be before OS X sees the same.
 
I switched to Linux Mint last year, it is free. I got fed up with paying for Microsoft's bloated systems. Any way at my age I just need to be able to have access to the net and be able to process my images.
 
When my wife got a new W10 laptop, I took over her old W7 machine, restored it to factory settings and then upgraded it to W10. Worked fine at first, but for a while now it will not update without falling over with a seemingly unresolvable Windows Defender error(s). Tried all sorts to fix this, but have had to resort to going into the registry and disable updates, otherwise it just keeps trying to update, but falls over on install.

Her W10 machine has worked fine so far and updates successfully. However if it's not been used for a while, you switch on to do something and it immediately goes for an update or installs the update it downloaded the last time it was used. Or the anti-virus whinges about updates which are urgent and need doing right now, etc, So that task you were hoping to get on with has to effectively go on the back burner while the machine sorts itself out. Should display a message that says "Calm down, Go and have a coffee!"

On the other hand, my desktop is a late 2012 iMac 27. Came with Snow Leopard and over the years has been successively updated to MacOS Sierra without any issues.

Having used, built, diagnosed, repaired and replaced PCs for work, home, games, data capture, analysis, presentation, etc. continuously since 1984, I'm finding that the Mac needs far less intervention from me. The only downside is that I know much less about the way the Mac works because I've never had to skill up to sort it out.
 
I think at the end of the dsy it boils down to the same thing as Canon versus Nikon, everyone has a choice as to whether they want a PC or a MAC. I'm a daily user of both and like parts of each. There will never be a system that suits everyone.

Over the last 30 years in IT I've seen all sorts of problems and for most always found an answer.

PC or MAC there will never be a one size fits all, there will always be updates and upgrades. New operating systems will come and go.

A long time ago I was told " if it was designed by a human it can be broken by a human " sadly that's not going to change. Whilst we have idiots in the world who think it's their right to screw with everyone's life then we will need updates.

As for PC or MAC enjoy what you have, stick to what you like and as a home user when it goes wrong take some time and learn to fix it. That's half the fun of ownership.

I have worked in IT for 20+ years and this is a never ending argument.

Stick to what you like and find the easiest to use, however, if you are connecting to the internet, please keep up to date with any security patching and have some sort of anti-virus (there are a few good free ones out there). If you are running an unsupported OS (eg XP/Vista) you are leaving yourself very vulnerable.

Even if you are not worried about shopping accounts or internet banking etc, the latest ransom-ware attacks could mean you losing ALL your images. The latest one this week isn't even wanting your money its about disruption, even if you pay there is no way to get your data back. (for a simple way to protect individual PCs against this one, look here)
