i shoot wildlife shots and have done for several years i work a local area that has a end to end length of around 100 miles ,i post my pics on flickr then on here and elsewhere .and have never hidden where i go giving a location freely so that others can benefit ,however for the past 6 or 7 months i'm beginning to feel stalked as two locals seem to be at my exact locations the day after i am .its almost as if they wait for me to post a species with location data then go there the next day to do the same .its getting to much for co-incidence now as some pics have been virtual copies of what i have posted i.e same perch etc. and i don't know whether to feel flattered or not .

my gut feeling at the moment is to stop giving locations out and just post the photo .what would you do .

its starting to niggle me a bit i must admit and its almost as if they can't work it out for themselves

Jeff, you do not own the countryside, so there is nothing you can do.

If it bothers you then don't post the location.

.....are their pics better than yours? :D

Pish!! Stop telling them where you're going or have been. I know if I find a decent location for stuff I don't share that information with anyone I don't know and trust. Let them find their own locations if they are that keen.

Does it bother you, and if so do you know why? (genuine question)

Maybe try going back yourself a second day and meet up - might be good to meet some others that clearly share the same interest?

Leave them a 'present' of some description before you vacate the area, that you know they'll find the following day.

It could be anything....

Maybe place a fake bird on the perch you know they'll be shooting, with a sign round it's neck saying "F*^k You"!!

Or maybe a bomb?

Give a different location, see if they come up with something original and 'worthy'.

I'd say dont give out the location/post pics until you have decided to move on to the next location. Although I like the idea of the fake bird with the sign round its neck. :D

I'd love to be a fly on a branch to see the look on their faces when they come across a platic budgie on a perch :D

Seriously though, if it does bother you that much then don't put up the locations although I can't really think it'd bother me that much as long as I'd got the shots I wanted.

i think you could maybe prank them in some way, set them up & play a joke on them.
lifes too short to be miserable, have a bit of fun with them :)

you could make a sign saying bird photographers please stand here then one about 200 yards away on a tree with a picture of a bird saying made you look

Does it really matter that much?
Personally, it really wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I'd be content with my own photography and a little bit flattered that others wanted to follow.

If it's bothering you though, go with your gut feel and stop posting locations or make contact with the other two and have a conversation. I assume that you're following them on Flickr.
You might find that they're really nice people . . . and if not you can just leave a dog turd in the prime tripod position at your next location (joking, before anyone gets upset at that)

IMO life's just far too short to get wound up by total strangers doing something completely harmless that they don't even know is winding you up :D

It's a funny one actually as there are a few local guys who I've not to my knowledge ever actually met but we have managed to be in the same location on the same time/day occasionally or the day after sometimes they inspire my photo from what I've seen them do, other times I appear to have inspired what they have gone on to do  there's no malice to it as far as I'm concerned...

This is one time I remember distinctly shooting a landscape at a particular location and I remember a bright red car passing near me, later that evening I noticed he had put photos of said car from the other side of the location I was shooting time stamp showed we were shooting within 15 minutes of each other  so it shows there are happy coincidences in life...

Personally I see no reason in getting agitated over it, they're people that share your love of photographer or the subject, embrace it maybe?

There are some wildlife photographers who scan the internet looking for locations were other photographers have spent weeks or maybe months waiting or looking for a subject ,spent hours in all conditions to get shots, the then so called freinds contacts etc then just goes out trophy hunting after spending hours doing there detective work , nothing wrong with that at all if thats what they want to do,but they then come back with the shot and post it up with comments along the lines of : just got this today as if their super wildlife knowledge and field craft skills just got them the shot , no substance at all to their photography at all , and i personnaly have seen situations were the so called trophy hunters have ruined locations with their total ignorance of the subjects and surroundings even to the point of blatant stupidity , all this just to get a photograph ....not all wildlife photographers are like this and i know that as a fact as i have had a number of fellow members on this forum who visited my kingfisher and little owl spots who have stuck to their word on my locations , but going back to Jeffs situation i would see it as a compliment and maybe get to know them and once their is trust then maybe Jeff could benefit from the situation and pick their brains for some other good locations.

I would take it as a compliment. They obviously like your shots and want to emulate them. If it really bugs you, don't make the locations public knowledge until you're done with it, whether that means you finish a set or sell your images.

If it doesn't bother you, just ignore them. If it does, don't post the locations. It's not worth getting stressed about.

Don't give away your good fishing locations or your good photography locations. Just post the photo.

cheers for the replies ,dennis is about as close to the facts as anyone ,i do know these guys and as guessed sometimes a lot of visits are needed to know where to get a shot or the best position to be into get it,dennis and mike know that from a visit over here .its a free world and i can't stop anyone going anywhere but to take a pic on tuesday and see a virtual copy on weds or thurs is to much coincidence ,i know what to do to cure it ,but it irks me that i should have to ..case closed ,thanks
