Hi Everyone,

I have just purchased a Canon EOS 1100D (arrived yesterday), I read a few reviews on it and the general consensus is you could go far worse for a first DSLR. A colleague also advised buying a cheaper body and getting more lenses.

However I have managed to go my entire 33 years and not actually know 1 thing about photography, ISO, exposure, noise etc etc means nothing to me.

Can anyone recommend a good book for beginners or know of any articles?

I want to try and get the most out of the camera, apart from just using the basic settings.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've got an 1100D too, sure it has it's limitations but it's a great entry level dslr and I'm sure you're going to enjoy it.

"Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson is considered the best book on photography basics.

This is a great recommendation, a very well written book, and it really does a superb job of explaining the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and iso.

Dont' spend all your time reading though, take some photos :) I started by using AV mode a lot (still do) seeing how that works and gradually moving to manual.

I will second that, and remember when you're starting out it's not just about taking good photos. It's out experimenting to see how making different adjustments change the resulting photo.

Digital photography 1&1 is a good youtube series. Have a look at the earlier episodes for the basics.

A useful link for you would be the forum's [thread=422783]Canon 1100D Owners Thread[/thread], if you have any hardware related questions.

Thanks for the replies I've read a few bits and pieces and i'm slowly getting it.

the 1100 is a great little camera and can take some superb shots especially when mated upto a good lens, i still have mine as my second body.

I purchased the 1100d before Christmas and can confirm that the book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson is worth getting as its really well written for those starting photography (Like myself).

Its only about £10 at Amazon.
