Lets say you work for a news paper, or even employed by a tog, are the pictures you take yours or theirs.. say for instance your covering an event for the people you work for, and are paying you to take the pictures, is the copy right yours or theirs..... not that this affects me in anyway, i was just wondering

Depends on the agreement you have with them.

Often with papers, if you're a staff photographer, copyright will be claimed by the paper but they let you use them for personal promo stuff. Then there may or may not be a release after you finish working for them.

Freelancing the copyright is yours.

I freelance for my local papers but the copyrights are mine... they keep to it as well.. if someone phones the paper for a print they tell them they cant and send them to me

My company's handbook says that any inventions, work etc produced during company time belong to the company.

I take photos for the website, publicity shots etc and they are 'owned' by the company.

It depends entirely on the contract. IP for employee's or contractors is/can be a complex area. In my work we get all creative staff and external contractors (IT and Designers mainly) to sign a copyright assignment document which assigns all IP to our company.

In the absence of anything specific in a contract, if you are an employee, your work belongs to your employer. Employer's rights are quite extensive and can include things that you might not expect, even outside normal working hours.

Easy definition of employee is someone that has their tax deducted at source and paid by their employer (though there are of course others).
