As the title says i am a complete novice, but have a passion for photography, really want a decent camera, but don't know where to start!
Budget £500-600 but can possibly be flexible here, whats your advice?

I admit being biased towards Nikon, but for your budget I think you could probably get a new D90 or used D7000 both with 18-55 kit lenses,if I am wrong I am sure someone else will correct me. You will no doubt get different suggestions from Canon users, neither are better than the other in spite of the good natured banter which goes on on here, but at the end of the day it is what feels best in your hands.
This is assuming you are looking for a DSLR of course, all the best with your search, let us know what you decide.

Thanks Ken, my friends were leaning me towards a cannon and then a couple said Nikon and then a friend pointed me this way for advice!
She said there was a classified section too, but i understand the rules so won't be able to view there for a while yet.
I am indeed looking for a DSLR.

as your starting out with a more or less fixed budget there are some things to consider.
1 =cost of camera
2= cost of lens (if not a kit lens)
3 =cost of memory card CF or SD whichever the camera takes( recommend sandisk 4gig
with around 45 write speed)
4 = do you want one that does vidoes or not
5 = a proper DSLR or compact

what type of photography do you feel that you will be principally doing (e.g. landscape, sports, macro etc. etc.)?

There really isn't a bad modern DSLR so don't ignore Pentax & Sony.
Handling is probably the biggest difference between them & what suits you may not suit someone else.
Having said that if you have friends that you could borrow lenses from then if you are happy with the handling of that brand that can be a good reason to go down that route.

thanks for that, is there a simple guide anywhere that explains all the letters/numbers, and also a termonology breakdown, i have been browsing but finding it hard to follow some threads, i am sure i will get there with time!

check out the glossary and you will see what a huge question your asking

To make things easier for you start on any camera in auto mode and let the camera do the work. Once you have got to take pictures without things like people standing infront of a pole so it looks as if its comming out of their head :lol:. This is composition which can only be learnt by trial and error.
You can then take it bit by bit experimenting with the other settings. Don't try and take it all in at once it will blow your mind

thank you have bookmarked that for regular reference!

My advice is go into decent a camera shop with someone with a little knowledge about photography. They can point you in the right direction and ask questions you may not have thought of.
Also a chance to get hands on as well.
