Hi all , im no good with this sort of thing, i want to just get a basic website up to put say 100 images on and ive seen with wordpress they host and i can setup a wordpress.com address for free. Ive got as far as setting up myname.wordpress.com but im really stuck at how i can create a thumbnail gallery or anything, i can see you can download plugins if you host a site yourself but ive got to be honest its all a bit beyond me is there any techno whizzes that could give me a quick guide or some advice ? id like to keep it as cheap as poss as its only a hobbie for me but im open to advice

Tbh Wordpress.com isn't really the best service for this kind of usage. You'd be able to fudge it on hosted Wordpress, but it really is a blogging platform rather than an image hosting/showcasing product. Something like 500px/Flickr would be a better bet.

Thanks , ive got accounts with both of these but i want myname.com and a link to a good site - im quite happy with the basic structure of wordpress and seen many people who have good sites but just not sure how to get started :(

Go to your WP Admin page, click on plugins and then Add New, search for nexgen gallery, install it and read the instructions but be prepared to do a bit of googling, the instructions assume you have a working knowledge of wordpress and it's shortcodes.

I did this last week and it took a while to get it to work adequately, still very much a work in progress though. The learning curve is not steep but the information you need is not always where you think it should be. If you've ever dealt with Linux help you'll know what I mean by that.

Was this with hosted Wordpress or Wordpress.com?

ah wordpress.com sorry to say i know nothing about hosting :(

My question was to Steep, as unless you pay for Wordpress.com, it is quite restrictive compared to hosted Wordpress.

Lewis, I have my own hosting through JaguarPC.

That's what I thought. The OP will be more restricted that you when it comes to adding plugins etc.

yes true , im happy using flickr at the moment but want something better mynamephotgraphy.com to put on business cards - thought wordpress was the best way to put a site together - must admit having my flickr account on the cards and pictures i sell does not feel good enough ?

Hosted Wordpress is a good way to put a site together (although it is mainly a blogging platform), Wordpress.com which you have been using is slightly different.

Have you looked at the sticky at the top of this forum?

Wordpress is a fantastic place to display your site but wordpress.com lacks the ability to use many of the fantastic plugins. You would be advised to self host if you can.

Another option is Zenfolio which has a good entry level way to get a web site up and running and it costs just £25. Very professional look and great galleries.

zonfolio looks good , i think im going to have to get a trial of that and see what it can do , its all very limited as im not to good with web stuf !

If you're "not too good with web stuff" a service such as Zenfolio/Clickpic/any of the other ones mentioned in the website sticky is a good call. Even if you are good with web stuff it is too (I'm a web developer and use Photoshelter as there is no point reinventing the wheel).

Since you're using this for business, don't try to do it on the cheap, it will just end up looking cheap and that will do you no good.

yup i 100% agree and thats good advice , i like the look of zenfolio as i can get started and 'upgrade' when i want to start to sell my prints, ive been taking photos for 6 years and have 100's i want to sort in lightroom and start to publish though flickr but id also like to do local events to sell some images on canvas / print - since im doing this i want to have a good branding and site for people to look at more of my stuff from, i think the £50 Zenfolio will do for me for the time being.

You can upload directly from Lightroom too :)

well created a basic logo nothing to clever - i think ive chosen a font for my watermark so now just need to fiddle with that site :)

well finally up and running on 500px 500px/tomknightleyphotography let me know what you think! :)
