hello all! :)

i have a small challenge for you guys that would help me alot :)

my question is... for 1300 pounds (could stretch to 1500 at most) what complete system would you buy? thats a body+lenses+tripod (not bag or memory)

now... igoring everything that ive currently got, what body+ lenses would you recomend for this price?

about me:

i have no preference towards brands at all,

i shoot mostly landscapes, people, and wildlife, with a tiny bit of sport thrown in... basically, in the past ive never exceeded 10-200mm,

im not particularly into macro,

i have a lust for full frame...but this can be ignored,



ive had a small look around myself, but i am apealling to you, respected camera geniuses, to sort me out:D
 
I'd pump for Canon as it is what I understand and go for a used 40D, Redsnapper tripod and head, 70-300 IS for the longer lens and leave somebody else to spec the wider stuff
 
Another canon user - it all depends what you want to shoot though.

If nature then you need a zoom that goes up to 300mm, or ideally a second hand 100-400mm

If low light clubs/gigs then need some primes (sigma 30mm 1.4, canon 50mm 1.4, canon 85mm 1.8)
 
I only really know the Nikon system so my answer is based round that (although I'm sure a canon setup would be equally good and about the same money)

Well if it was just Landscapes and Portraits I would have suggested an S5 Pro (about £440 new at the moment) along with some good S/H glass e.g. Nikon 80-200 f2.8 / Sigma 70-200 f2.8 (about £400), Sigma 17-50 f2.8 / Nikon 18-70 (about £200), Sigma 10-20 (£300) and a Manfrotto 190XProB plus suitable head (£100).

As you've said you fancy some wildlife and sport the same lenses would suffice but you'll need more of an all rounder with a faster FPS and Buffer Clearance time e.g. a S/H D200 (or a new D90 - but you might have to compromise on the lenses ).
 
If you want full frame you are really looking at a used Canon 5D and possibly a used 17-40L and a 70-200 f4 L total would be about £1500.

Unfortunately, when you go full frame you will also want to keep the quality of your lenses up and this costs money.
 
You can get a Pentax k20d, 18-55mm & 55-300mm for about £800.00

That's the one, the biggest question on the forum.
I debated this one not so long ago, had lots of restless nights, no doubt so did most of the members here.
Look at this way, what is your experience with DSLR, if a little then stay small until you get the experience you want, having the best camera could complicate things for you. This way you will answer most of your own questions, finally join a local camera club, if none available then meet up with some members here, if your happy on your own fine, good luck.
 
thanks for all the replies so far, in answer to your question quedash, i have just over a years experiance with a dslr, but in that year, ive used both nikon and canon models, and as of yet i havent been swung towards either. the problem i keep coming up with is... as much as id like the right gear, i cant help but think, im going to take the same shot with whatever im using :p. however its a huge investment, so i want to get it right:)
 
If you're going the Nikon route ...

Fuji S5 Pro (about £440 as indicated from SimonTALM post), a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (about £330 from WHE, Nikon 70-300VR (£430, again from WHE), a Manfrotto tripod and good ball head (£200).

All these are prices for new bits, and comes to £1,400 ... if you want to go all the way and spend the £1,500 get the nifty-fifty too and there you have a nice kit.

thanks for all the replies, this sounds like a really nice selection i must say... but im finding it hard to get for under 150, cheepest prices ive found are:
5d: 750
70-200f4L: 360
17-40f4L: 525

coming to 1635... so slightly over, which is a shame, but still, may have to save for a bit more:)

any more suggestions of a complete kit for around 1500?
 
But you dont have to get it all at once, one of the pleasures is choosing and building up your kit. So choose you equiment one piece at a time as and when you have a need for extra kit.
 
Pentax K20D with 16-45mm kit £679, Pentax 50-135mm lens £529, Pentax 55-300mm Lens £189. Redsnapper tripod legs and head £100 approx. This would come in at a tad under £1500 and would pretty much cover you for for all your needs.

The Pentax 50-135mm f/2.8 lens is a legend too.

I have owned a Nikon D50,D70s & D200 so do have some experience with Nikon gear but I don't think you could get a better value setup than the Pentax gear.

The build quality of the K20D is first rate and the ergonomics are just right (for me). The cheaper Canon/Nikon cameras do feel "plasticy" compared to the Pentax. They will all do the job though.

You will get a great deal of advice to buy Canon/Nikon because they have the lions share of the market but I would highly recommend trying to get hold of a Pentax to try out.

I would suggest canon over nikon as it seems to me you can get them cheaper. Buy second hand only, you will save a lot of money and the L lenses suggested should retain their value for years to come - you could swith systems without any loss if you buy wisely. I would go with used 40D if I liked the sports and wildlife, as you will not be able to afford any decent telephoto on 5D! If you have shot with cropped sensor cameras with 200mm, that was effectively 320mm. think how much would a proper fast 300mm cost? at the wide end there are good alternatives, such as sigma and tokina which will give you wide enough angle even on 40D
