Hi all.I have been to the other forum to introduce myself and to let everyone know im new to photography.I decided to take up photography as i am disabled now and
pritty much useless at everything else.
I was given a CANON EOS 1100D from a very kind freind. There is no lens with it so i purchased a couple from ebay they are as follows - -

Canon EF 75-300MM F4-4.5.6 MK 111 USM ZOOM LENS.
Canon EF 28-80MM F3.5-5.6 ZOOM LENS.

Would you say these are compatable for my camera in Auto mode and if so what should they be doing? Should they be focusing themselves and setting up themselves in Auto mode?
It seems like they are not doing a thing and the picture and foucs is no better than that of a crappy little disposable £2.00 throw away camera.
I must admit i had great expectations and its putting me off this photography larky.

Thanks for any help.
Speak in dummy terms please Sorry.

Hi Lewis, first off, there will be a switch on the lenses marked AF/MF, make sure it's set to AF which is auto focus, you can guess what MF stands for.
With your camera in full auto, i.e the mode dial set to the rectangle, look at your subject, half press the shutter and the lens should whirr as the inbuilt motor focuses. The camera should then beep to say it's acquired focus and the image in the viewfinder will be clear.
Neither of those lenses are renowned for their stellar performance but both will give decent quality images if used correctly.
They don't have built in image stabilisation so any amount of camera shake will show up as blurred images, more so with the 75-300 as the end will waggle about a fair bit when it's extended.
Neither are suitable for low light shooting without a flash and will struggle to find focus if there's insufficient light.

As above, it sounds like you've got the lenses set to Manual Focus! :|
Have you got the manual for your camera?... I'm not being funny, but it might be worth having a read through and getting used to some of the settings and behaviour of the camera too :)

set the dial on the camera to the green square, and make sure the lens are set to af and as said press the shutter button half in, on the screen you will see a green square when the picture is in focus then press the shutter button fully and it should take a picture in focus
