The following 4 shots were taken with a 1DMkII, 5D, 30D and 50D. They are real world shots done in 5 minutes with no mirror lockup and no processing, just RAW sharpened 3 and cropped to JPG....no subsequent sharpening after resizing the JPG's. They were resized to give the same image view...ie, the 5D was cropped most and the 30/50D the least. The lens was the 600/4 IS using AF centre point and one shot...ISO 400.

Make of them what you will. They're in no particular order and I'll spill the beans later in the thread.

Bob

Edit....there was also a 1.4x T/C on the lens

I would pick 4, 3, 1, 2, in terms of the ones I like.

Quick, spill the beans ;)

Hahah, nice. I guess I was deciding while you where posting ;)

Best to worse along with my (wild) guess of Body:
3 - 1D2
4 - 50D
1 - 5D
2 - 30D

My guess.

Okay,

We're far enough down the page now.....

1....30D
2....1DMkII
3....5D
4....50D

The 5D surprised me....I thought the big crop for a full frame body would take away too much detail.
I'm sure that all could have been made better but the exercise was just aim and shoot with nothing too elaborate in the setup.

Not being into Canon, is this the expected result? What are their comparative prices, or do I have to look them up?

Let the Canon junkies chime in...

I'd have gone 3,4,1,2 which is great for me. I guessed No 3 was the 5D as it seems a little warm and my 5D always gives a warmer image than my 30D.

Not sure I need the 30D after seeing this, I may sell both the 30D and 5D and buy a 5D mk II.

Not quite what I had expected but price isn't really a good basis for judgement....ie, the 1DMkII is really a sports style body with fast AF and burst rate.

I had expected that the 5D would have come bottom simply because there would be enough pixels left in the crop to give the detail.
My pre-test guess was 50D, 30D, 1DMkII, 5D. (4,1,2,3).
As it happens... 4,3,1,2 was my appraisal when I saw the results.

I'm going to have a second try without the T/C.....I believe that this will bring the 30D up the chart and drop the 5D back....maybe I'm wrong in this estimate though.

That was very interesting. Thanks Bob:)

yea thanks Bob, good insight.
Love these pixel peeping tests.....:)

I was mostly commenting on image quality although for colour i prefer the 5D (3)

Its a difficult one really, because if you look around the image different things stand out.

initially i was looking at the ridge tile and growth around there, but if you look at the green moss (left side) the 5d beats them all in my opinion.

Its certainly one that does your head in..... thanks Bob :cuckoo:

Interesting Bob. It should come as no surprise IMO that the 1DII should come below the 5D. They both have the same pixel density (i.e. a 1D is a cropped 5D sensor to 100x100 pixels from both cameras have the same field of view) and the 5D is the newer technology sensor. 1 series are also noted for RAW that need more sharpening that the more "consumer" cameras, including the 5D.

It would be interesting to re-run the test at f/11, f/16 and f/22 to see if this diffraction softness people talk about really happens in the real world.

i was just bout to ask why no one though 2 was the best because it is clearly the best from my eyes but bob spoilt my fun already :p :(

Very interesting topic, thanks for taking the time with this Bob :)

That's interesting Roberto. If I was being a bit critical though, and I suppose I am, these aren't very consistent crops for a controlled comparison, in fact the full frame shots are showing a markedly wider FOV and therefore gaining resolution as a result. No excuses now - you're a goddam engineeer! :D

Engineer (ret'd)....

Short of time as always. I've taken some more shots at both f/8 and f/16 without the T/C. I'll get them sorted and posted later....a TV ariel this time.

What impresses me is how well the 5D stands up with it being cropped. I would like this test run from a similar position but with different lenses (same AOV) to then see which really is the best, I think the 5D will walk it to be honest.

I understand the perspective will change between lenses!
