I'm thinking of getting my youngest a camera for his birthday - he'll be 7 next month

Are there any capable cameras at this price level ? I have no knowledge of them and so I'm stuck

Any pointers greatly appreciated as I've spent hours going round in circles

Thanks

any of these at your nearest store?

my tuppence worth is when my lad showed interest(age 8, 4 years ago) it was all about the wildlife so I picked up a Panasonic bridge camera cheap and he loved it, he now uses an older DSLR with 55-200mm lens.. he is never interested in landscapes, always about the zooming in on wildlife..

so double check what he would like to be doing with a camera as you might find a compact quickly gets forgotten about.

You could be right, David. I bought my eldest a bridge camera in The summer and he's already talking about a dslr as he's not happy with the image quality

That review about the Panny mentions noise at iso100...a bit of a worry for me

He probably won't notice but I would - maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way round ...

Maybe YOU want a new toy... :D

That's what I usually do. I fancy a play with the new D3300 so I'm trying to pass it off as getting it for the missus... failing miserably upto yet.

Hahaha - no, not me. If the IQ was poor, i wouldn't buy it.

But I'm just trying to think what's best to get him

Well I can't recommend the Fuji xf1 enough tbh. Have a look at the owner thread further down the page. There's also a cracker for sale in the classifieds all be it the same price as new, it does have a few extras included.

Buy used, there are tons of compacts out there that cost nothing. I bought a Panasonic LX3 recently for $52

Thanks - I know used makes sense but for a birthday present, it's not really an option

Does look like it takes great shots...I don't "think" he will need a large zoom..hmm

Hmm that's true... what about trips to the zoo etc? Maybe a superzoom would be better? The xf1 is coolio though. Fast 1.8 aperture at the wide end which is great for playing about with. It's fully manual but comes with a very good auto exr mode. Also has alot of presets and filters which would be fun for a kid to use.

Let us know what you decide.
