Compact suggestions

A mate of mine is going to New Zealand in July and is looking for a compact to take with him, he is not a keen photographer but likes to take snaps to remember his travels. He asked me to suggest him a camera.

My first thoughts were Fuji, s9600 or s6500, but on second thoughts these might be a bit OTT for him, both in size and functions.

I looked at the Samsung NV7, but most reviews of this were poor.

Looking for something not too big but good optical zoom.

Any other suggestions?

Picked up a Canon G7 for my brother-in-law before Christmas (When Jessops were still price matching). It a great little camera. I think you can pick one up for around £300, as long as you don't go to Jessops for it. They want about £450 the last time I looked.

I don't suppose the make will matter too much if he's just a snapper but tell him to get one that takes easily available batteries and tell him to get loads and loads of memory for it.

so many good compacts now its hard to say! Personally i would go for something with a bit of zoom, and as steep says, get the memory cards in and plenty of batteries

Can anybody tell me... do any of these cameras shoot with a 3:2 aspect ratio (like a DSLR/35mm) rather than 4:3 like most digital compacts do?

i bought a canon ixus60 to keep in my toolbox when off at rallys and testing and its suprisingly capable for snapshots and things like that

suprised how well it caught this shot!

I have a few, allof which I recommend - a Canon G5, which is a VERY capable camera, but which is no longer available, and my pocket camera, a Nikon S1, which also produces excellent captures.

I also have a Leica Digilux 2 which produces captures of the highest quality, but they are like rocking horse do do

I recommend the G5 highly, much better IMHO than the later models. Can be found occasionally in the used columns.
