Hello everyone.

I wondered if anyone could suggest a compact / premium compact for my wife? I was initially looking at this, but it has been out of stock for ages. http://shop.fujifilm.co.uk/fujifilm-x30-refurbished.html I appreciate it is an older model but she likes the retro look and the fact that the lens is a fixed barrel zoom is also what I was looking for (its also a really good price and these refurbished cameras are usually like new when they arive). We have had some regular zooms that have broken when they go in her hand bag. (the on button gets accidentally pressed and the zoom tries to open stripping the gearing and breaking the motor). so what we are looking for is:

Fixed barrel zoom or a lock that prevents the zoom accidentally opening
Ability to shoot RAW
Retro styling preferably.
price around £300
as well as a good image quality and features such as wifi etc.

Thanks for your help

The X30 is a very good camera, by all accounts. I love my X10 which has almost identical styling and the same fantastic lens (but OVF rather than EVF). It's bit on the bulky side (ok for a reasonable handbag), and taking the lens cap off and turning the zoom to switch it on is a bit of a pain. I've lost my lens cap twice but found it again, thankfully. You could try a wanted ad on here, or there's a few on fleabay. Otherwise, keep checking the refurb store (don't believe their email reminder service: stuff comes on and sells before the reminder goes out!). Have you checked the X10/20/30 thread? Not the biggest but the most-read thread on here, IINM.

Thanks Chris for your advise, hopefully it will come back in stock soon. Failing that do you have any other similar alternative recommendations not necessarily Fuji. Thanks.

Another vote here for the X30, I have one of these (Not for sale) as a more comfortable carry around camera to my Nikon D700 that weighs a ton. You won't go wrong with an X30. Try a wanted ad on here!

I can't get on with a camera with no viewfinder, I sold my X10 to a guy who had just the same problem!

I think you've answered your own question get a x30. They have killed the range so there will be no replacement apparently so you will have to buy used.

I think the only camera which meets the criteria listed is the X30. I have an X10 and it's a good camera, but not as compact as you might think.

If you're prepared to relax some of the criteria then the Sony RX100 is the premium compact that is universally recommended these days.

I know it doesn't quite answer the original question but seeing as it seems choice is pretty limited these days (I waited months for an X30 to appear in the refurb store but that day never came!), have you considered a m4/3 camera? I'm not sure where prices are right now but an OMD EM10 with 14-42 lens isn't that much bigger (maybe a bit bulkier in terms of shape) than an X30 but has a far bigger sensor. Retro appearance and a good EVF too.
