Hi all

Further onto my post yesterday about holiday cameras my dads now looking at getting a compact point and shoot to take with him instead of using his iphone. Ideally he would like to spend under £250 but is not bothered about new or second hand. Ive been looking at the sony rx100 mk1 but what other cameras would people suggest.

thanks in advance

Jack

I think you might be able to find a RX100iii or LX15 at that price. I'd suggest one of these.

I got my parents Panasonic LX15 because it has a touchscreen and they'll never use the EVF in Sony RX100iii

Panasonic Lumix give fantastic results for general use, anything from a TZ60 up.
I consider an EVF essential, and to me is the most significant difference between a camera and a phone, but maybe less important in the UK with the limited amount of bright sunshine.
I would not consider the TZ70, it is not as good as the TZ60, I have both. I bought the 70 as I thought it would have less noise with its lower resolution sensor, but it does not improve things at all.

I have the Panasonic TZ100 and there's also an updated in some ways TZ200. These are 1" sensor compacts like the Sony RX100, these cameras have a sensor which is much bigger than the usual compact camera sensor.

As I might have said in the other thread the choice came down to the EVF for me and I like that the Panasonic has one in the top left corner whereas afaik you have to pop the Sony RX100 evf up and down which would annoy me.

Canon S100/110/120
Canon G9 /G1Xii
Most of these can be found in that price range or lower lightly used.
RX100 variants always come up well recommended but tend to cost bit more you would struggle to get more recent than RX100iii under £400
