Hi all,

I am going to be doing some travelling in the next few months and as much as I'd like to take my DSLR with me, I'm not sure it's going to be possible due to space etc. As a result I am looking to get a really good compact, with a budget of about £200.
A friend of mine has the Panasonic Lumix DZ7 which I was surprisingly impressed with - she got some great landscape shots with it. I have also heard good things about the Canon Ixus range.
I will mainly be taking photographs of scenery and really want to get the best that I can out of a compact...

thanks for any help :-)

I have a Panasonic Lumix TZ7 and love it. The quality of the images are stunning both printed and on playback, very sharp. The video function is very good too.

Didn't need to convince a friend too hard to consider the latest model (TZ10) recently when he was also looking for a P&S for travel. He was well taken aback with it. Latest model also has geotagging which would be handy for you.

Only thing I'd say is invest in a spare battery if you're like me and take tons of pictures and constantly fiddling with the modes or playing them back.

Thanks guys for your contributions :-) does anyone have any thoughts on the Canon Ixus range? Or any others? Thanks!!

I have been using a Canon Powershot G11 for the past year and although this might be a little out of your budget, its smaller cousin is the Canon Powershot S90. This shares the same 10MP sensor and has a fast f2.0 lens. I would highly recommend this and there are excellent deals on this camera as it has recently been replaced with the S95.

Another vote for the TZ10. Although I have 2 Nikon DSLR's and a micro 4/3 - the TZ10 is still my most used camera. Excellent image quality, great zoom, brilliant video, but GPS never used. However I bought the TZ10 instead of the TZ8 because it had stereo video and is great for recording gigs.

The Canon SX200 can now be had for £169, or there's a bundle deal at Jessops that includes a Sandisk 4gb card, spare battery and a Lowepro carry case all for £209.
It's a 12mp camera with 12x optical zoom with 4 stop image stabilization, 720p HD movies and intelligent face detection.

The Panasonic TZ8 is equally as affordable a 12mp camera with a Leica 12x OIS lens HD video and similar features to the Canon.

I'm, as you've probably guessed a Canon man, so i'd go with the Canon. But i'm no fanboy, I just prefer the Canon controls and full manual.

TZ10 also has full manual and the videos are brilliant.

As above. Bare in mind the TZ8 is almost identical other than it doesnt have the GEO Tagging feature......

Thanks everyone! One queston - what is geo tagging?!!

Hi ,

One other thing, Amazon have the TZ10 at £ 223 at the moment + you get £30 cash back so comes in at 193.00. They also have a free case included.

Geotagging - camera has a built in GPS receiver so will embed the location data into the file when you take a picture. It means you can see where the pic was taken. As I understand it the TZ10 goes one step further and actually has a database of well known landmarks etc. So will say "eiffel tower" on the picture - just in case you forget where you were :)

Another vote for the TZ10 by the way - just waiting for mine to arrive :)

Cool! Gonna order that from Amazon I reckon! Good with the cashback :-) thanks everyone for the help!

Great camera but remember the GPS will run your battery down very quickly. Only switch it on if you really need it.

I might be a bit late with my opinion but Im only agreeing with whats been said about the TZ. My first compact was an Ixus & I loved it, I only gave that up because I wanted a longer zoom & I opted for a Lumix TZ, any of the TZ range are fantastic, you won't regret it. Enjoy your travels :)
