Hi all would you go for new of second hand ...and what gb is the best 2,4,6,8 gig....having a look at one called my-memory.com<<<are they any good.

I tend to use play.com as they seem to be consistently the cheapest. I certainly wouldn't go second hand though, wouldn't know what I was getting!

As far as size is concerned, the general train of thought is to use a number of smaller cards rather than one big one, just in case of failure (The old eggs in one basket scenario).

very sensible i have just bought a 4 gig off e-bay £8.00:naughty: second hand :thinking::bonk::bonk: 133x pro my-memory, but i am going to store photos on this one as my space on the hard drive is filling up i have another 30 gig left but this will do for storage.. but then again i blasted off 23 pics of the helicopter that flew over before so a big gig card would work for me in that situation, changing cards is like changing Len's in a dust free environment. +- all the time in photography.

I see you've just bought a second hand card from eBay but when you buy again I second the recommendation for Play.com. They're usually pretty cheap and the price includes p&p. I always go for a quality SanDisk and have never had any problems. Once bought a brand new Sandsk Compact Flash card from eBay, it wasn't cheap and was from a seller with over 200 99.9% positive feedbacks and it turned out to be a fake - I would not waste my time saving a pound here and there with eBay!

When you say 23 pics, why do you mean by big card? On a 12mp camera I get approximately 220 pics on a 4 gig card in RAW.

And yet people still then whack them all on 1 hard drive on their PC!!!

I wonder how many people have actually had a CF card fail of any type?

I've never heard of it.

I've got ancient CF cards (like 1meg) and these must what? 10 years old, and they still work.

There is a lot of baseless FUD around to sucker people into buying "branded" goods, when there is more chance of getting run over by a bus* than a CF card failing.



*I made this up, but its probably not far off! :D

Indeed. I always back up to a second hard drive. And no, I have never had a CF card, or any card for that matter, fail on me, but apparently some do!:shrug:

And that's my point - there's probably little (or no) difference between them, and the people who have had failures would have had problems anyway, regardless of what card they use - simply because it was caused by something, rather than an inherent issue with the card.

I bought an Extreme IV card, about 4 months ago, for £20 - knowing it's a fake. It's been through 10,000 pics without an issue. Speeds are more than acceptible, although I don't have something to compare it to. (I should add that I have other cards, just not an extreme IV)
 
I had a card fail on me a couple of years ago. It was a Fuji 4gb (genuine). It had around 300 Jpegs on it from my holiday in Turkey. My computer couldn't read it when I tried to download the pics, but I used the Sandisk rescue program. I recovered all but half a dozen or so. The corrupt files were still readable, but had severe black and white banding.

I have never heard of any card that was corrupted, but couldn't be recovered useing a rescue program.

I bought a genuine 8gb Sandisk Extreme IV from a UK seller on Ebay a week or so ago for £36. It's the cheapest I've found.
 
my memory have an 8gb card rated at 133x for 18 quid brand new....... Where's the point in getting a used card :shrug:

They also have lexar pro cards of 8gb for 21 quid delivered. :eek:

Someone on another thread stated that the mymemory cards are actually rebranded SanDisk cards, but I'm not sure where the info came from...

I'm going to order some MyMemory cards next week. Was thinking about 4GB, but for the price it seems better to go for 8GB....

Hi i took 23 shots of the police helicopter that flew over head, it was on duty so not giving it's best side,:lol: with a display where you have time to set up, i would shoot a few hundred at least, so i would need a few memory cards, mymemory are re branded scan-disk, i read it on another forum try and find the link, they made them in yellow for a while 133x 4 GB card £8. if its crap i will send it back, but i will buy new from know on.

All pix get backed up onto an EHDD (or even 2) and CD/DVD before the card gets formatted.

I've had a CF card fail and (of course!) it was an unrepeatable event that it had shot. I DID manage to get the photos recovered by a retrieval company but now I only use SanDisk cards up to 4GB.

Anyone found any "interesting" pics on a 2nd hand card? RescuePro (and other software) can generally retrieve them even from a formatted card!
 
I personally use 4Gb cards from Sandisk. These are cheap enough from play.com or 7dayshop....I've used 7dayshop for mine. Although if you can't be bothered going online you can get PC World to price match play or amazon:eek:
 
Well it arrived 4gb as new £8 delivered a cracker, done some shots and perfect,so when at air shows i have the capability of taking in excess of 700 raw/1000 Large.
