I've got a Fuji Finepix F100fd cost about £160 12MP 28-140mm AOV IS FAce recognition
also got a Fuji Finepix Z100Ffd cost about £105 (ebuyer) 8MP 38-180mm AOV IS comes in a couple of colours, mine is a copper colour.

Both very good, but if I was buying again I would just buy the Z100fd, easier to carry around, slightly smaller and the images are great.

There are so many to choose from, its a tough question.

I, however, have a particular favourite in the Olympus mju 790SW. I love it. It is exactly as the TV ad shows it to be. I use mine for underwater shots mostly (no hard case required unless you take it deeper than 3mtrs)

The quality is good and has an abundance of manual functions for some good effects. Excellent compact in my view. I bought mine from Boots about a year ago and I paid £148 for it.

I would suggest you check www.dpreview.com and check the specs and conclusions of any you are thinking of purchasing.

The Panasonic Lumix are lovely little cameras. Check out the fs5 and fs20. Both get great reviews and are in your price range.

I'm gonna recommend the Canon Powershot A570is again (see the thread on underwater cameras). I've had great results from it. All of the cameras that people recommend will produce great photos, whats more important in my opinion with a compact is how comfortable it is to hold - you will sometimes want to pull it out your pocket and tale a quick snap one handed. Some are simply too small and there is a big risk of dropping it.

Ideally, you should be looking for one that has all the features you need (Manual, Av, Tv as well as the Scene settings) easy preview mode - some are just useless at being able to preview without closing the lens cover, flash compensation, white balance settings.

dpreview is a great site for comparisons, but there is no substitute for actually holiding one these things and seeing what you can do without resorting to the manual....

I'm a big fan of the Canon IXUS. It's a point and shoot - no real manual settings though. The Ixus 80 is well within your budget and comes in pink!
