Now before anyone jumps on me, I have done a search but couldn't find the answer to my question

Colleague has asked what compact camera would be best for him. He wants to use it for gig photos mainly so one that can cope with low light, budget no more than £250

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

I think that you're gonna struggle to find a compact that's good in low light for any price. They typically have slower lenses, and the flash is probably going to next to useless at a gig. I suppose that to get anything remotely compact and remotely useful at a gig you're going to have to get one with as fast a lens as possible and process the high ISO noise out for the best effect.

Things like the Panasonic LX3, Canon S90 and the micro 4/3 offerings will get you the best results but they'll be over budget. For the budget you might get hold of an entry level DSLR and lens which would be infinitely better than a compact, but it'd be physically a lot bigger than a compact.

Good luck.

Thanks both for your replies, I have passed this on to my colleague. An SLR is out of the question as they just want something to be able to put in coat pocket or wife's handbag

Fuji F70exr, supposed to give good results in low light plus its got a 10x optical zoom in case your not up front. Can be picked up for around £140ish with fuji money back till the end of this month. Some good reviews online.
