Compact Camera Suggestion

Hi,

I own a Nikon D5000 and enjoy taking photos even though I am far from a pro at all. However, I am going on holiday to the beach and last thing I want is to screw up my Nikon D5000 with sand or carry the huge bag around everyday. I need something compact, easy to use that takes great photos. I don't need high Megapixel value, I need quality. I am looking something around the £150 mark.

Since I am really out of what's available and current market I am just wondering where to start? Can somebody please just shoot some suggestions?

Let me start by saying I looked at:
http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/equipment/reviews/1/compactcameras.html

and they suggest Fujifilm F70EXR being their highest rated camera. Anything else?

Cheers,

Paulo Matos

You might want to have a look at this article from DP Review. It dates from July of last year and while a year is a long time in the compact camera world you'll find that most of the cameras mentioned are still available and will now fall within (or just outside) your budget.

For example the Nikon S9100 is £159:99.

If the camera you want has to have a decent zoom and be a capable all-rounder, any of the cameras mentioned should fit the bill.

Thanks for your comments. I was about to get the S9100 since it is much cheaper than the P300 but then I started reading about the really problematic image stabilisation of the S9100 at high zooms so now I am unsure... Will keep digging...

Personally, I'd recommend the Canon powershot SX220 HS, 14x zoom, high sensitivity cmos sensor, optical IS. It's a bargain now because the 20x SX240/SX260 models replaced it at the start of this year

Thanks cmonkey, sounds like a great little camera. Thanks for the suggestion! :)

Exactly the model I was about to suggest, I done some research for my OH recently and concluded this was the nicest option for a "proper" compact at decent money. IMHO Canon compacts have the nicest ergonomics/menus/handling of them all... and for full disclosure I'm a Nikon person when it comes to SLR's, so not Canon biased in any way

Lumix TZ range are good (I have the TZ7 which I think was the last one to not have manual controls - its only flaw).
A smaller pocket option would be a used Canon S90.

sony H70 is good
