Off to the states and might get a decent compact camera so I dont have to carry the 5Dmk2 around. Any suggestions?

Would be cool if it had a hot shoe but its gotta have aperture and shutter control and even better a wide lens.

Well, the obvious choice of camera like the G11 would be the G11. As a Canon user it should be an intuitive bit of kit to use.

The other contender has to be the LX3. I've become more impressed again by the LX2 of late, better zoom range and a real 16*9 sensor/screen combo but it lacks the hot shoe.

Definitely.. I have a 5D mk II, and I bought my other half a Canon G9  ;) Best of both worlds!

The G11 produces RAW files that you can load into Canon DPP software.. it has a hot shoe, and the same modes that a DSLR has (manual, aperture/shutter priority, program). I'm temped to upgrade myself :)

It does, but apparently (I only found this out the other day in another thread) the DPP software that comes with Canon DSLR's doesn't read the files. The G9 comes with a sort of DPP-lite software for its own RAW files.

I've never used DPP - I use Adobe Camera Raw with CS4 for all my post-production. ACR opens G9 RAW files just fine, so there's never been an issue for me.

I use lightroom so should have a problem. I do like the look of the LX3 but how does it rate compared to the G11 as thats $100 more expensive

I just upgraded from a G5 to a G11

LOVE IT :D

:canon:

G9/10/11 would be my choice, especially if you're wanting to do any strobist-type shots with it as they will sync up to around 1/2000 (depending on the model) using a neutered ttl cable.

I had the same predicament last year and went with the G10, it performs very well especially for close-ups of flowers etc.

I'd take the LX3, but I would as I like my LX2

Maybe the choice comes down to the lens? The LX3's is wider and faster, the G11 has more zoom.

I'd take the wide and fast lens every time.

If you can sacrifice the hotshoe, but want portability and manual control, in a well regarded camera, then take a look at the Canon S90. Review here - http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_PowerShot_S90/

It seems plenty of people are shying away from the G11 to go with the S90, because it does offer the control, but in a far more pocketable form. At the wide end it also has a faster lens - f/2.0

Yup. S90 is ergonomically the best compact to date I've used. I'm really tempted by one but worry about losing the hotshoe I have on my G10

G10 will be cheap now the G11 is out.
I have a G10 and have used for professional work since they came out. Stunning, but not very good with high ISO - JUST useable at 400 for me, and only at a push at that. In good light it is brilliant and I won't bother changing it for the G11. Plenty of DPS published with it. Even a 10 foot print off it.

You should be able to find a G10 lurking somewhere, or a used one for a song. The G11 has a swinging screen ( an unimportant upgrade from my point of view) a bigger sensor with fewer MPs - so better quality again than the G10. If the G11 would fit the diving housing for the G10 I would change for it...but it doesn't and I am not changing BOTH, so happy to live within the constraints of the G10.

The lens on the G10 is brilliant - super sharp and don't bother stopping it down too much, it doesn't need it.

ahh, well thats not important, grr I just dont know, LX3 or G10/11...

The LX3 looks to be smaller and has a wider quicker lens...the canon is a canon....

The LX3 is a great little camera, I bought one for my wife a few months back. Build is excellent, it's nice and compact and the 3" screen is superb. As you mentioned it has a fast f/2 2.8 lens and I believe strikes the right balance between wide angle, short zoom and optical quality. Also given the relatively small sensor size higher ISO performance is really quite impressive (although not to D-SLR standards).
We also looked at the G9/10 at the time but concluded the LX-3 was a better tool for her/our general needs. We've also got the neat retro leather case for it. It's a fine little camera, she loves it and I have to say I'd be happy with too (I do use it occasionally) :D

I'm a G7 owner and just looked at the S90, looks like an excellent piece if kit.

I take my G7 to alot of gig's but it's mega chunky, and doesnt fit in your pocket.

Not been obsessed about my camera equip for a few months now, thanks tdodd i can see some open wallet surgery coming in the next couple of months!

I have a G9 and it is very good as long as you keep to low ISO. I have no problem using RAW in DxO. The new Olympus Pen IMO looks a fantastic small/in your pocket camera.

I guess it depends how big your pockets are ;)

No doubt it's a great camera but when I had a play about with one I didn't find it as compact as I was expecting.

I played with the G11 in Jessops today and it does seem large, a good camera but then I want something compact. But it does look good! Hmm, where would have the LX3 for trying out?
