Compact camera - any recommendations?

Interesting thread. I looked at compacts and went up and up in price trying to get decent IQ etc, befire realising the small sensor prevented the quality I am used to from a DSLR. I just keep my D60 in the boot of my car for when it is needed.

This wont suit everyone, but it works well for me, I just didnt see the point of spending £300 to get an inferior picture....

I also had this problem........didn't want to lose quality as I wanted to use it as a second camera when walking around with my DSLR, and easy enough to carry around if I went somewhere that the SLR wouldn't be suitable.

I ended up getting the Panasonic GF1 + 20mm f/1.7 pancake lens.........it cost £600 which is pretty pricey but the quality it produces is insane for such a small camera in comparison. Sometimes I think the IQ is even better than my 40D + L lenses...and certainly no worse.....very impressed. Some say it is bulky but it is small enough to fit in your jacket pocket still.

Congrats to OP for getting the S90, I've heard this is a cracking camera for the price.

Right then...I need to point out something with the TZ10 sounds a great camera but its big fault...reviewed in digital camera essentials is battery life..
Even with the camera turned off the GPS is still working a fully charged battery only gave 75 shots..

Just bought a TZ9 from Dixons in Manchester Airport £238, it's a TZ10 without the GPS, hence better battery life, all the other advantages of the TZ10 without the disadvantage :) Great camera

Well, the Panasonic TZ8 held up ok. I was on a business trip to Scotland and had a couple of hours in Pitlochry. I haven't tried it inside properly yet but the shots came out as good as I expected. Obviously not as good as an SLR but I wasn't expecting that. The highlights seem to blow quite easily, perhaps some more playing with settings may improve it. Overall though, I'm happy with it.

Anyway, just if anyone's interested, a few from the TZ8.

Because having a compact enables you to get shots you might never have been able to get if your dslr was too bulky so you always left it at home. A compact can go everywhere with you and has better image quality than a camera phone

The LX3 is a glorious little camera although the reach is limited. I sold mine and got an GF1. But I miss my LX3.

Nice shot! I looked at the LX3 but restricted zoom and price were against it vs. the Canon.

I've recently got a Panasonic LX3 by the way, and used for the first time yesterday
