Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase a compact camera with at least x12 zoom. I currently have a canon 400d with a range of lenses but I'm looking to purchase something a little smaller as I have a little one on the way and would like something a little smaller and easier to use.

What do you recommend?

Thanks
:)

What would be the rough budget, pocket size or bridge camera size and what will you want to photograph? Basic point and shot or some manual controls and how big a zoom?

Without knowing your specific requirements it is difficult but I would always recommend the Panasonic TZ10 which is a great 'do it all' camera. It has its limitations in terms of only shooting jpeg and the GPS is a bit of a gimmick in my opinion and drains the battery very quickly but it has a great lens and is very customisable in terms of picture settings.

It fits comfortably in a shirt pocket so works well as a camera to have with you all the time.

With a newcomer on the way you also have the added benefit that it shoots excellend video.

Hope that helps

i have the Panasonic TZ6 and its by far the best compact i have ever owned. the battery life is great, the better half used it all day long in kenya and didnt run out of battery. The quality of photos is fantastic. Pocket sized, pretty robust (the wife has dropped it numerous times from shoulder height - on drunken evenings)

+1 for Panasonic

+ another 1 for the Panasonic - any of the TZ-6,7 or 10's really...

I've got the TZ-6, and it's an excellent little point and shoot, does pretty much everything you want from a camera smaller than a deck of cards. The TZ-7 builds on that, with HD video capability as well, and the TZ-10 is the latest update, a couple of niggles that i've had with the TZ-6 corrected (moved the mode selector dial to somewhere it's less likely to get knocked) and adds GPS mode to geotag your photo's (handy as I use the point and shoot as a "visual sketchpad" for future landscape expeditions with the full camera kit - nice to be able to get back to exactly the same spot on a hillside )
