Quick idea, and feel free to tell me to P off!!

I recently got a £2K bill from Getty for using one of their copyright images. It was provided to me by a friend on a DVD of stock photos.

Do you think many people on this site would readily contribute for free to a "Talk Photography commercial use photo share" ? Where you would choose to send as many or as few images into this scheme, and any TP members are free to use the images.

Hell this may be a bit greedy, as I don't have the skill required to make you want any of my images, but in the future I might.

At the end of the day, you don't need to submit any images which you sell or could sell, only the ones you know that you won't sell for whatever reason.

What do you guys think?

Gary.

The cynic in me says cos you got stung for a 2K bill, this idea will enable to use peoples photos for free

I much prefer mattyhs idea

Not that anyone would want to buy mine :D

It's a lot of work for someone to take on, specially to set it all up. A free service would sit nicely with my idea, I wouldn't mind sharing my (poor) images with forum peeps, although I'd say it'd need something like the for sale section, where you have to have 100 posts & a month on the forum before you can use an image.

The images would need to be specifically licensed as well.

Would be a lot of work, but would be cool if something incorporating both ideas ever got made. I have a mate who has been trying to talk me into going into business with him to start a micro stock site....so will pitch this idea to him, see if he shows any interest.

mattys idea sounds slightly better, otherwise the forums would gain thousands of users, who registered to use the pics only.

Maybe something like use a pic for free for non commercial purposes with a credit or a link (or both) for the photographer. And a paid for pics for commercial purposes

Ill be honest the 2K bill prompted my post, but why wouldnt it? I build sites all day every day and I now need to be very careful as to where I source my images. I thought surely if I contribute to such a service, then fair game to use such a service?

Maybe the rule is, only members who have 2,000+ posts and who also contribute to the service, get to use? Will stop the flood of new users looking for freebies?

Anyway I nearly never posted as I knew it could hit a nerve or two.

Gary.

Is like i said it's the cynic in me, i'm sure your intentions are honourable  so no offence meant

Thinking about it more maybe a Photo's Wanted section where people could ask for a particular type / subject or whatever photo and then members could respond and they could negotiate the deal and a percentage could then go to TP

Just thinking aloud really :bang:

i would be happy either way, would like acknowledgement form free use, if it was to be used commercially then again would expect reimbursment. good idea to get known.

I don't think the rule of people having to have 2000+ posts would be good as people would probably just start posting crap to get access but definitely something where you need to upload a photo to access a photo type of thing. Eye for a eye or something? Perhaps some dedicated mods to ensure photos being uploaded adhere to some basic standards of quality (or you could post 20 images of the floor to access 20 good images lol).

This could encourage some pretty great photography!

Photos wanted is a good idea as I'm sure from the variety of members here you could obtain help to source almost any type of photo!

Gary you having a bad week or what? :(:'(
I assume they've hidden all the rope, tablets and sharp things from you in the office m8, you must be getting suicidal by now, what with the vat man's 200k, Getty's 2k.... anything else you'd like to share.
Don't think I can wait for next installment.

PS getty and VAT I can get away with, the CSA?? Not a hope in hell.

I'd be willing to contribute but it would be subject to my approval as to the use of any images.

Have you thought of browsing Flickr for images using Creative Commons?

Chin up. Mine tells me she stays out of spite.:help:

I wish I could help mate, the CSA are worse than scum. It makes me want to get on the next flight out of the UK, too many commitments back at home though. When my son is old enough, I will sell the business and the house, and me and my family are out. Rip of Britain is just a little too "rip off" of late.

Gary.

how about thumbnails smal file, then person who wants the photo contacts vedor and arranges licenece for the piccy. so copyrigh holder has say on uses. and cost or free status.
