Firstly I am not trolling.
Secondly I know I am not an angel when it comes to this. I have had my wrist slapped many a time by a mod for getting arugumentive.

Right, can I really try and ask people to leave more constructive comments. I see threads were people leave comments that offer no help what so ever to the OP to improve. This drives me mad!!! No-one is going to learn if you put, 'These are poo' or something to that tune. At least say why and if you feeling genourous offer a solution. If you havnt got time, comment when you have. I mean its common sense!!!!

Secondly read your comments BEFORE you post them to make sure they sound like you are offering advice and not being a pompus arse. Fairy nuff it may sound funny to you but someone else may not find it funny. Also if it is meant to be a joke leave a  or :D or :coat:.

Basically just thing about how you would feel if someone posted a comment like your about to.

Thank you for reading
Matt

Constructive and informative.
 :coat:.

What a loada s**te (poo):D:lol::D:lol::D:lol::D:lol:

Thanks for posting that Matt. I've noticed the same thing and the few times I've looked at other's photos I've left comments that IMHO I thought were constructive but then noticed that most people haven't so as a relative newcomer to the forum I thought I'd got it wrong so I've not done it again. It was my understanding that some opinions were wanted if people post in the sharing threads and if they want more in depth critique (that I don't feel in a position to do yet) they would post in that thread. So maybe I should start saying what I think makes it a good pic and what IMHO could make it better. :)

Seriously Matt, I completely agree. I feel bad sometimes viewing a post, and I dont always have the time to comment, so I just click back.

Unless its in General Photo Sharing, you should leave some CC :)

Im not sure everyone puts their images up for constructive comments (except those in the critique section).

Some post them to show others really, so no critisism is necessary, it's just to see if others like it as much as they do.

Leave a consructive comment. If someone doesnt take that way just explain that you were just trying to help

Be construcive. I, personally, like it when someone rips my pictures apart. That is how I have learnt what i have.

I guess people should make it clear in their posts if they want C+C. I always do, but never ask for it, whoops :D

Well if they dont want C and C then it wont take 2 secs to type 'no critiscm or adivce wanted' would it?

Matt, most people ask for C&C when they want it. I take C&C to be criticism and comment, now I may not be the most competent member on here but I feel that making a comment such as on parts that you like in the image and parts that you dont is constructive comment. I dont feel that giving technical advice is what people want if they did they would use parts of the Forum that cater for it. Thats it mini rant over going for a lay down. Regards Jim

I didnt mean techicnal but just leaving comments like 'looks like a ebay ad' or I dont like it' is not acceptable at least say why.

A very reasonable request. There are a number of pigeons (no names, no pack drill) who fly into your thread, drop a mess all over it, fly out again and never return to see the mess they make. If you seek clarification on their post, they don't respond as they never return.

If I knew what trolling was, I'd comment on that.

Trolling is like trying to start a argument or get to another member.

It is to true. Its a shame really as this is a great forum.

Trolling is exactly what you just described - someone posts a inflammatory/derogatory remark to start an argument then leaves everyone else to fight it out.

Google oh how I envy american students for an example of one of the greatest (as in most successful) trolls ever.

i completely agree with the sentiments, some folk here lately have been really grating my cheese and the rest of the team with pointless, purile and pathetic posts. The mod team WILL be coming down hard on people about this soon, its a photography forum, post photos, look at others and make constructive crticisms and posts, and dont annoy the team.

Good I am glad. It is annoying. I post a picture to get C and C and I get a grilling why I thought it would make a good picture. Yeah fairy nuff ask me once not FOUR times.

I also think I need to think about my replys to these comments and not go at people all guns blazing.

What about the other half, is Fabliously stunningly beautastic" any more informative than "I don't like it" ?

maybe its just nicer but with an equal eureka value of 0

personally, I'd find it easier to ignore plainly obtuse comments.

As matty says this and some related issues have been discussed a lot recently behind the scenes and more will be forthcoming soon.

That isnt that bad as the person really likes it cant find faults with it that need to be addressed.

As matty says this and some related issues have been discussed a lot recently behind the scenes and more will be forthcoming soon.

That is good to know. THank you

There is a very definite problem to how people perceive criticism from strangers. I saw a post recently where the critic appeared to be shot down because he wasn't qualified to offer criticism. I questioned the validity of this and got this response;

"Sorry Bob, i guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this one. I have seen way too many people swayed by other peoples opinions over time. Im happy to take constructive feedback on board, no problem at all, but for me the person has to have some sort of credibility before I really look closely at what they say. There has to be a certain amount of respect for their work in the area i work in and they have to have demonstrated a certain amount of ability"
I'll add that I hadn't, and wasn't going to, criticise the images....simply shocked that the poster thought crit was the preserve of an elitist few.

The poster and myself disagreed (amicably) about the above statement but it if some posters have this attitude (rightly or wrongly) then the safe bet is only to offer positive crit' unless you know that negative will be accepted in good faith.

Bob

 I take on board adicve no matter who gives it me. If it is going to help me then that is fine. That is shocking someone thinks that!

Wow. Not in a good though.

I am often put off posting comments when i see comment's have already been posted like 'Excellent shot' or 'Stunning' etc when there is obviously something amiss with the picture.

This is good to know. I perceive a problem in that some of the offenders have very high post counts. I am sure they will defend their position on the basis of seniority rather than the merit of their actions.

Sorry Matt :D
OK seriously this post is sorta connected to the one I made awhile ago

It seems that even when you give C&C the receivers only acknowledge
The Ooo aint it great posts and ignore the criticism however positive it is.
I agree that positive constructive C&C is a great help and should be accepted in the spirit in which it was intended
( by most people) When I first joined I got a hell of a lot of C&C that I didn't ask for
but by posting on a photographic forum I just imagined that that is what I would get
( I am forever greatful for those that pointed out my short comings on Images that I thought were the dogs testicles BTW )

In return as I have learned from here, I have tried to help others with constructive C&C most took it in the way it was intended other have taken offence,

I guess my "interpritation" of this site has changed, now, when most people post they don't want C&C they just want to share their images,
some I have noticed are truly awful, but now, I just resist the temptation to help ( mostly) and ignore the post(s).
Sorry if this comes across as aggresive largely its not the way it was intended

BTW Please link to your arguementive posts I seem to have missed them :D

I think you are completely correct. Praise without explanation is almost as useless as condemnation without advice, but it's better for the person getting it.

Not upset about the comments made about your Anglers picture are you Matt ? ;)

Whilst I wouldn't agree with people simply posting "thats EDITED" I have no problem with someone simply telling me they don't like the shot, it doesn't work for them, or questioning why I thought it would make an interesting shot. If they don't want to explain why then thats up to them.

I do honestly think though that some people on here are posting positive comments just to be nice ! Is it not counter productive to say someones shot is "nice" when really its not that good ?

Comments and Critique means just that. "it doesn't work" or "I don't see the point" is a comment and if I put my shots on here for all to see then im prepared to take those comments.

I do agree however that Constructive Critique is MUCH more helpful than simply providing a negative comment and peoples response to my shots have been both helpful and encouraging and I am fully appreciative of that.

I dont. I say what I think then say sorry to be harsh. The OP wont learn otherwise.

Sorry Matt :D

I aint saying but I did get a telling off from Jimmy Lemon for name calling! Want exactly my finest moment onthe forum.

IMO. If I receive bad Crit then it makes a good comment all the more special.

I need to be more subtle :bang:

Thank go I aint alone!

I always like to get some c+c on my pic's, it also p*"!!s me off when you post a pic looking for some c+c and even ask for it in the post and you get 200 views and 3 replys, i try to answer to most of the posts i look at but it seems to me that some people will post replys to certain members pics all the time and don't post to others to try and help them out . Then again it might just be me they don't post replys to :coat:

As you know I try to post on all the motorsport and transport ones. I think the views are also people who arent TPF memebers  COuld be wrong! But I do understand. I always try to comment on ones with no comments! But I dont see them all.

Why get so worked up about virtual comments from virtual people Matt?

Somebody says something bad, ignore it and move on........

If everyone starts posting like that I will never get to the standard I want to in photography.

Yes you will.

Listen and read the positive advice and help,as I do, from the people who offer it.

The trolls and BS, ignore.
