Yes
I have tried commander mode on d90 with a sb600 and was wondering is there a third party flash that can be used in this mode?

The Yongnuo 460 II also can.

Thanks for that i have checked them out they look good saw a video on them overheating but that was due to extreme use, it will make a good back up flash and comes at a very low price. By the way have you used one.

No it can't, the 460-II is a basic manual flash, it has no TTL, no wireless capability, all it has is an optical slave, so no, it doesn't work with Nikon's CLS system, all it can do is fire when the slave sees the flash from the onboard flash.

What do you mean by "in this mode?" As a commander, which the D90 is, or as a slave, like the SB600?

Either way, Nissin, Metz, Sigma do both options. The top models with the big jump in price are the master/commander versions - which you presumably don't need.

Mid-range, I think the Metz 50 AF-1 looks pretty good, £180. Some of the others in this price bracket don't do high speed FP sync which is a very useful feature that I really wouldn't want to be without.* Also check that the head rotates fully in both directions. Yongnuo also do a cheaper TTL slave version but I forget the model number (no HSS/FP though).

Edit: just checking, of the non-master/commander guns I think only the Metz does HSS/FP out of the third party manufacturers!
