Hello,

I will be visiting the UK in Oct. Staying in the Salisbury area. Can i have some suggestions of good photography spots this time of year?

I am used to photographing in the portsmouth, cornwall and dorset area. So would like to see some different areas. Landscape , castles , forests etc..

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks
TheGary

You may find that a wander round this site interesting. http://www.geograph.org.uk/ If you want castles then Scotland is the place to go, but a bit of a distance from Salisbury. The New Forest is nearby, plenty to photograph there, Beaulieu is also worth a visit.

TOP TIP: Bring an umbrella.....

Bath has some lovely architecture, Bradford On Avon the same

Warminster, Frome.

Lots of Army activity on the Salisbury Plains at the moment too.

South wales is not too far.. about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs away...

You have the Capital, Cardiff.
Cardiff and Caerphilly castles...also Castell Coch
Cardiff Bay and Marinas..

Further west, Swansea and Gower coast..

Further west again, Tenby and Pembrokeshire coast..

Mid wales about an hour outside Cardiff you have the Brecon Beacons National Park, Lakes, Resevoirs, Waterfalls and plenty of mountains...

List could go on...

On the way to Cardiff, explore Chepstow and the Wye valley. Tintern and the abbey. Great photo opportunities there.

Its so good you have to pay to get in.....

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Toll on the bridge from England into Wales....

Wont need the bridge if you come via Gloucester, through the Forest of Dean (loads of photo ops there), and wind your way towards Tintern and into Chepstow.
You can of course escape free of charge the other way :D

Hi Gary

have a look at my flickr - I've got some New Forest, winchester & salisbury shots - all fabulous places to go :)

if you want to do an early morning sunrise at stonehenge, you'll have to get in touch with english heritage and book & pay in advance.

I'd suggest the 'roof tour' at salisbury - £8.00 I think and only twice a day, but you get to photograph stuff that the general public doesn't see - the view down the cathedral from the west window, inside the spire and also the view from the spire parapets - which is pretty amazing!

good luck, and I know you'll have a great time!!!:)

edited to say - you're perfectly located for the jurassic coast - durdle door, lyme, lulworth cove ;)

If you're staying in the Salisbury area then Stonehenge is only a conkers throw away. Other Henge's in the vicinity as well.

Brixton is actually a very vibrant place, amazing food and quite a melting pot of people and cultures. I actually wish most people weren't afraid to go to places like Brixton, I love urban photography. Most people come to London to take pictures of flowers in parks and dry old statues.

Don't ignore the picturesque photo opportunities provided by the Severn Bridge:

I had a week in Wiltshire last year visiting the area my dad used to live. Old Wardor castle is worth a look, as already said stone henge is unmissable and theres Bowood House (where my dad used to live (http://www.bowood-house.co.uk/).

Beautiful Pictures...thanks for the link. I will definately take the roof tour. Look fantastic. I also have NEW FOREST on the list. Looking forward to seeing the fall colors. Everything has already fallen from our trees here in Canada. Will likely be snow by the time i return.

Thanks again

Peak District in Derbyshire if the Lake district is too far, it's in the midlands and offers great oppertunities like, Hope valley, Edale valley, The Roaches, Curbar Edge etc.

Hello ,

Just wanted to thank everyone for their input on places to see. I had a fantastic trip to the UK, as they always are.

Ended up going to The Cotsowolds(bourton on the water, upper and lower slaughter BRILLIANT !), Lulworth Cove and Castle, Durdledoor, Windsor Castle, Lacock(a must see) Shaftsbury(gold hill), Devices, London, Portsmouth, Salisbury and Cathedral, New Forest and Beaulieu, Brooklands Museum, Marwell Zoo, and East Grimstead area that i was staying at.

Like i said FANTASTIC trip, and i am now editing the photos. To many, but better than not enough. When i went to the cotswolds, i didn't know what to photograph first. Such a beautiful place.

Shall post some pics when i am done editing.

Thank you again to everyone for there input.
thegary:)

Glad you enjoyed the trip, look forward to seeing the shots. I've did a couple of paintings of Gold Hill Shaftesbury, sold them a good few years back.
