Hi
My OH is a bit of a comic con fan and I'm tagging along to a show she is visiting quite soon, but just wondering if anyone has been to one of these shows and what the general etiquette is about taking phtos of people dressed as storm troopers, batman etc?
Do people generally ask permission or not? - don't think I've ever asked permission to take a photo in my life but I don't want to get into trouble for not following general etiquette.
Thanks

There is a Comic Con in Liverpool and I`m planing to visit it. To me these people are working hard to make their costume/dress so I`m sure they will be more than happy for their picture to be taken.

Ask for a pose, or at least get tacit approval - look them in the eye before raising the camera to yours.

There is plenty of discussion on the forums used by attendees to these events (and Whitby) discussing photographers behaving like tits, might give a few pointers no how not to behave...

Generally just hold up your camera and smile, if they start to pose you're in ;)

I usually ask, most are more than willing to pose and you'll get much better photos rather than shooting from the sidelines so to speak.

Once you've been to a couple and a few people start to recognise you you'll get asked to take photos :D

Go as a sort of 'Borg yourself - with a GoPro (or similar) as the cybereye!

More sensibly, snap away but be prepared to stop if someone objects. Ask your OH what her feelings (and those of her comical pals) are regarding being photographed, I doubt there'll be many objectors!

Thanks for the tips - it was cardiff film & comic con that we visited today - really good show - the OH was doing most of the job of getting people to pose - she got a bit annoyed when she took a shot of mike myers, one of her favourite characters and i took at shot at the same time but managed to blow out her shot as i was shooting with flash and she was shooting ambient. Took me a while to get the settings right but i sort of settled on f/8, 1/30s, iso160 and flash at 1/2 power (flash has a GN of only 20m) - will try and get some shots up once downloaded. It was quite crowded so most shots would have been at a distance of about 2 metres.

Ok got them downloaded so will post a couple

I think if a go to any more of these i would pay more attention to subject distance as i'm pretty sure i was focussed at about 3 metres when 2 would have worked better - all quite new to me so quite a steep learning curve

have added some more here http://www.boliston.com/2016/03/06/cardiff-film-comic-con-march-2016/
