No
Has anybody been yet to see how much of a sale it actually is? Thinking of going later, need camera body, but no idea what stock is like at the best of times.

What Comet sale?

The company is for sale. I don't think there's an in-store sale on.

In one of daily papers earlier, said they were having sale to get as much money back as possible.
Maybe I read it wrong.

Yep, they're having a fire sale to try and liquidate some cash... Just back from Edinburgh store, they had not a single piece of slr gear, and the price reductions on other stuff was nothing to write home about at all, 40 quid off a telly here, five pounds off a kettle there. From what I could see the tablet section was very crowded, but I didn't see anything discounted.

You have to bear in mind that profit margins on electrical goods are very low, in the region of 5-10% so a fiver off a kettle is probably as good as you're going to get.

it is the hype in the paper that people expect more
they said in a local paper games and conoles will be blown out in hull
hull is the main HQ for comet yet for the last 5-8 years i ahve not seen a game in store or a console as they never sold any as they were always too expensive

Gave our local Comet a look as driving past. As has been said no discounts to shout about. The funny thing was they had a banner hanging up saying

" now recruiting ask in store or visit www.comet.co.uk" lol

very good piece of rumourmongering by someone in Delloit if you ask me - drove pst a Comet today, never seen the car park as busy.

If they charged every on 50p to have gone in they'd have made a mint.

Kind of reminded me of vultures circling before the body has stopped twitching

Went today, prices as normal so much for the sale the media are advertising!

Went into my local comet, st. andrews quay, in Hull. Nothing had been reduced as yet. The manager said that anything written in the press about price reductions were not true. No instructions had been passed on yet to reduce prices. Although that may change in the next day or two. He also said that one of the shops in Hull was maybe changing to a Maplin????

I wouldn't get too excited...some of the suppliers will be taking their stock back. I understand for example that Dyson have taken all their stock back.

Comets always advertised they have no sales, just always low prices?

...Or was that bad marketing?

Their biggest mistake apparently was not having a good on-line strategey.

Hope they get saved by someone, my thoughts are with those who may be on the dole sometime soon.

The story is that they may be bought by Currys or Maplin or both, in part or as a whole.

No sale at the moment.

I think their biggest mistake was selling the company to the former owners of MFI back in 2011 for £2, and look what happened to them

just seen on the news that gift Vouchers have been suspended and stores have been told only to accept payment by Credit Card or Cash ...

Do you know I always wondered how stopping vouchers was legal - after all isn't it a promissory note just like a tenner but store specific?

Always wondered this myself tbh, I think it's because you become a creditor and will only get back whatever fraction of money the business has left after all costs are taken into account, usually a very small percentage...

Probably find in the T&C's, that acceptance of the vouchers binds the customer to agreeing that the retailer can cancel the offer at any time without notice.
Devil is always in the detail with things like that.

I'd be surprised.

Not Maplin's market (albeit additional competition would be welcome) whilst you generaslly see a Currys / PCWorld in the same locations as Comet.

If Maplin are silly enough to have bought Comet they'll probably be the next to go under. If you can't make a business work after paying £2 for it you have no chance. Same happened with focus diy.

Where did you read that?

That's not happening in a month of Sunday's..Curry's/Dixons have had a torrid three or four years and have done a bit better over the last 12 months. They a) don't need to and b) can't afford to. on sales of £8bil last year Dixons made a whopping £80mil profit hardly the margins that support expansion.

Maplin are after some stores to turn into Maplin not to leave as Comets

With the demise of Comet, there will be no high street competition for DSG. Bad news for the high street shopper.

Thats what I thought, certainly no going over the road to haggle any more.

Dixons spend their life price matching against the web....literally every day they check their prices against the web competition.

There's plenty of competition.

Have to say I read it originally as they would buy the entire business. I still doubt very much they will...Maplin stores I have seen are a completely different footprint to Comet's...I have only ever seen Comet in retail parks and only seen Maplin in High St locations. As for Dixons they definitely aren't going to buy the business (huge CC issues never mind financial ones) and as for single stores, they might take some over but they aren't going to need to buy them unless they are in extremely desirable locations....Dixons are trying to cut costs not expand them. Their net margins are 1%!

Can't see how: 'The story is that they may be bought by Currys or Maplin or both, in part or as a whole.'

Can't see where they match or better the web, I get better prices on the web than any of the DSG stores, and they won't price match websites such as Amazon, Hughes Direct, etc. on electricals. On computing, why not go in to a DSG store and ask them to price match ebuyer.

Sale starts Thursday

Well you know when you are reading things on your phone with kids around your concentration is not always 100%. Still I don't think it will happen.

They price so that they are at a small premium to Amazon.....two years ago their prices on average were 25% above Amazon....now it's 3%.

How do you know? Has this been publicly announced or is it just hear say?

Information is like sex, tell where you get it from and you never ever get it there again!

Well on their website all it says is 'sale starting soon'. Frankly though I am not expecting too much of a sale. I've always found them a pretty expensive place to shop compared to the competition. I'm not really surprised they went out of business considering the prices they charged both in-store & online.

Nothing as sinister as that - it's actually the law!

A gift card isn't the same as cash - it's technically more like an IOU. To use the jargon, you are an unsecured creditor of the firm.
When a company is in administration (or receivership, although they are not the same) the law is very specific about the order in which creditors are paid. Unsecured creditors rank very low (only shareholders are lower) so are unlikely to recover all of their debt.
If the administrators were to honour a gift card before paying any outstanding tax debts or secured creditors they'd be breaking the law.

I'm not saying it's right, but as the law stands that's how it is. Don't blame Comet or the administrators.
