Can someone please let me know of any potential issues with purchasing a separate monitor to use with my laptop.

I'm about to get my hands on a laptop which has plenty of processing power to run the usual photo editing software but the screen isn't 100% sRGB I know there are options to purchase relatively good value for money monitors that do produce 100%.

Am I likely to have any issues linking the two together?

A couple of times a month, I do presentations where I use
a 17" MBP and a 27" cinema display. I use the same combo
setup for post production classes… dream tools really!

Just get a cable with the correct connections (my laptop/monitor setup is HDMI both ends but yours may be different) and get an IPS monitor (standard non IPS monitors are very directional). Laptop screens are pretty useless for photo editing.

Look for displayport/mini displayport. HDMI is limited in the resolution it can output, though if you don't have a choice over the laptop then I guess you'll take what's given.

Do you call this limited?
HDMI Specification 2.1 is the most recent update of the HDMI specification featuring advanced features for the HDMI eco-system. It supports a range of Higher Video Resolutions and refresh rates including 8K60 and 4K120, Dynamic HDR, and increased bandwidth with a new 48G cable. Version 2.1 of the HDMI Specification is backward compatible with earlier versions of the Specification

You'd need to check your laptop spec but a lot of the time the hdmi output res is limited due to lower versions. Probably what he meant.

Thanks Neil, yes, older versions of HDMI are limited in the resolution they can output.
