I'm trying to use the colour replacement tool in PS CS3, a fairly straightforward job when I've done it before, but apparently not now! I'm trying to change the green in an Aston Martin logo to black (i.e. so I don't mess up the wings/text, but when I use the tool all I get is grey, and not the black I want! Strangely, if I just switch to the normal brush tool, it paints blacl!! Any ideas????

That happens to me too!!! :)

gave up months ago!

Oh pants!!!

It's so strange though

Ha, now done it through the Image<Adjustments<Replace Color, but I still ideally would like to be able to do it using the paintbrush

ive done it before and its worked and im following video tutorials but it just goes gray!!

Layer opacity? What tutorial are you following, we might be able to spot something if we can see it.

:bang: reviving this thread because I am having problems doing what should be the easiest of jobs. I want to change the white areas of this image to another colour, but regardless of what I do using colour replacement tools, all I am getting is muddy sludgy replacements, not the vivid reds, sparling yellows, etc etc, that I want. I have tried doing a straight colour replacement, doing it in a new layer, checked opacities, eveyrthing, but can only get yukky colours.

Any ideas, step by step instructions [have tried following several online tutorials, no joy]

Some one please help, pretty pretty please :(

Create a new layer, fill with say red, set blend mode to multiply.

It's been a while since I have used CS3 but these are the steps in CS4, which I hope are not to different:

To use it, you it select the colour you would like to replace (press alt key and sample colour) and then set this as the background colour (press x on the key board), choose the foreground colour you would like to replace the background with.
Select the colour option in the drop down menu at the top of the screen when the replacement brush tool is selected, and set the limits to "find edges" and select "colour" in the mode drop down menu, this allows you to paint away the background colour with the foreground colour and will not change any of the other colours in the image. This is best used when there is a fairly uniform colour replacement required.

this is my way of doing it in CS4. it might not be the quickest or best but it works for me.

1. start image

2. layer > new adjustmentds > B&W. Alter the colour channels dependings on the colour of the object (in this case i made the red much darker)

3. mask the area you want to keep coloured
