Just getting back into taking pics and I have rescued my old (and I do mean old) film stuff.

I got a roll of T400CN Kodak Professional developed today (went out of date 2003) and it was a grainy as a grainy thing in a hailstorm.
A couple of shots I liked the look of it, most are terrible, but is this due to just being very old?
I may have over/under cooked it ASA wise at the time as I often did. With it being so long ago I can't remember so no instructions given to the developers.
So this may have compounded the issues.

After much rambling I will try and get to my original point I intended to make.
What is the modern colour process B&W film like and is it expensive?

Tony

Oh and my favourite B&W C41 film: Ilford XP2 Super 400

Taken with Nikon F80 and AFS 50mm f1.4G

Lovely stuff but I now have a dark room so switching to normal process B&W film instead.

Thanks for that Darren.
Great shots in the link BTW.
Will try and get my hands on some. :D
Although 10 rolls is a bit much for me ATM :(

The shot of the bridge is great. I think I have a fetish for B&W bridge shots mind you. Had quite a few bought prints on my walls in my old house like that.

Will you be offering mail order processing in your darkroom ;)
And is there anything that isn't in your new studio? :D

Those shots of Cassie are in Garry Edward's studio not mine :)

I would try one of each of the films and see which you would prefer. I did prefer the Ilford SLIGHTLY.

I totally missed the fact that it was Gary's studio, thought your garage looked loads bigger. Must have been distracted by the nekkid ladies.

Jessop stock the Ilford but at £6.50 a roll they can :whistling:

Well 7 day shop still have the BW400CN

£3.49 a roll and free postage. (click the film)

Cheers for the linky.

Will order a couple of rolls later in the week. :D

The Third way with C-41 black and white is the Fuji Neopan 400CN - To be honest, I prefer it to the Kodak, and can't really tell the difference between it and XP2... I don't actually shoot any of them regularly any more, as I process my own now, but it's handy to keep a couple of rolls in the camera bag, in case you're away from home, and can just bang the shots through a minilab.

Cheers Big Yin.

Unforunately I don't have the option of processing my own, your all lucky blighters in that respect.

I suppose I will just have to bite the bullet and choose one type to start off with and then next time try the a different option.

Get a Patterson tank and real, developer and fixer, and you're sorted (providing you don't need prints). I'm sure it will be cheaper in the long run, and you'll feel proud holding a successfully-processed strip of proper b+w film up to the light knowing it was all your own doing. ; )

That is a very interesting idea. I would need a changing bag as well (I think) and very detailed instructions (for an idiot).
I will look into costs as my budget is very very tight ATM but you are right that the feeling of satisfaction would be fantastic.

Thanks for links Big Yin. :)

Alas my financial cirmcustances don't stretch to that kinda extra outlay just now but if things improve for me then I will certainly be getting some dev kit.

For now I think I will just have to stick to the odd C41 B&W roll and Tesco for dev.

Thanks to everyone who has offered guidance, much appreciated.
