Hi folks

Can't find an answer on previous posts, I finally have bought a colour munki display, calibrated my monitor, all seems ok, but do i have to continually leave it plugged in for the ambient, i am only an ameatur tog, and thought about checking the profile every 4 weeks, i send my images off for printing, i do not print my own. It is just the display that needs to be right. Many thanks.

I too have recently bought one and from what I understand leaving the sensor plugged in will adjust the display for changes to ambient light. A monitors output may change a little over time but shouldn't be any big deal.
Once you have got your monitor looking good when compared to your prints then you should be ok to unplug it and just do a check every few weeks which is what I plan to do.

Just how much does your ambient light change? Probably not a lot. I think that allowing the Color Munki to change the level of illumination of your monitor will cause more problems than it solves.

I'd suggest that once calibrated you put the Color Munkie away until it is needed to calibrate your monitor again. I wouldn't get too paranoid about calibrating your monitor too often as most LCD display. especially LED illuminated ones are very stable

Ok thanks, for the info, i found it interfered with my speakers, as my desk is only small, so it sits too near, will unplug it, and check periodically. I am using it on a dell ips screen.

Just a thought (and I'm not sure this is correct**) but when you unplug you might need to disable 'Ambient Light Smart Control', otherwise the software could keep looking for a measuring device which isn't there and proceed to mess up your previous calibration.

** I've got the ColorMunki Photo but I use Eizo's software (called Color Navigator) rather than X-Rite's so I'm not 100% certain of the above.

Thanks, i have just ticked the box to remind me every 4 weeks, i have not enabled the ambient light control.
I have just run the colormunki and done nothing else, should i do anything else or is it an auto thing. Ie i hear something about the adobe gamma, i am all new to this

Once calibrated , leave things alone until you get the reminder to recalibrate.

Forget about Adobe Gamma. It will screw things up. It was a visual approach to screen calibration, but if you used it and calibrated the screen results were unpredictable. If you have it installed, remove it, and recalibrate. If you don't then don't worry

I find I need the ambient light compensation left on - using a Pantone Huey calibrator BTW. My editing suite faces almost directly East so in the morning I get sunlight streaming through the windows and it is VERY bright in here. This changes throughout the day, as the sun moves around the sky, until by midday the light is pretty reasonable but by late afternoon (especially at this time of year) it is getting rather gloomy.

I could just close the blinds in the morning, I know, but I like sunlight and being able to see out of the window - just a quirky thing I guess. The Huey is set to do an ambient compensation every 15 minutes and sometime I can actually see the change as it takes place but the overall change is more noticeable first thing in the morning. When I power the computer up for the first time it uses the last settings from the day before and then does an ambient correction and the change is dramatic ... almost like night and day :D

Just my experience, of course, and yours will undoubtedly differ but I thought it worthwhile putting the other side of the arguement (so to speak).

John Thanks for the advice i will un-install the adobe gamma then.

Steve, thankyou for your opinion too, my room is quite shaded, but we will see over time, its my first ever calibration, so its all new to me.

As John (Chappers) says Adobe Gamma shouldn't be used if you're calibrating with the ColorMunki.

You might not have Adobe Gamma installed but if you have it should be turned off. (If you have it should appear in the msconfig/startup tab list).
