Hi i dont know if this is a common problem with the canon 17-85 but this color fringing while using this lens has become realy noticable of late is there a cure for it or do i px it for a better lens dont know what to do for the best

If by colour fringing you mean chromatic aberration (CA), then yes, the 17-85 is not good for that!

You've four options:

1) Avoid shots at 17-20mm. It seems much worse at those focal lengths.
2) Shoot in RAW and process in DPP. The auto-remove tool for CA works very well, IMHO. (lightroom/PS also have tools to remove/reduce CA - but I don't have these tools so have no experience...)
3) Post-process the CA out manually (e.g. http://www.digital-photography-school.com/how-to-fix-chromic-aberration-in-photoshop)
3) Buy something else.....

Thanks for the replies yes this lens was the kit lens i find the lens very usefull ie range etc will have a go at removing in dpp or photoshop see what results i get any idea on a good replacement for not alot of cash eg px this one

I replaced mine with a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8.

Sigma do a very similar 18-50mm f2.8 and I'm pretty shure that both are available with IS these days.

They have shorter range than the 17-85mm but they're f2.8 and certainly the Tamron that I bought is optically better than the Canon lens.
