Hey Folks...

I've just started my college porject to be handed in early may.

I need to produce 20 final images on a theme of my choosing.

I have decided to shoot portraits, they will all be shot on the 5x4 using Off Camera Flash to assist with creative lighting and will have a ruynning theme that the portraits will feature something personal to the sitter but being in a strange place.

i'll post them all on here as and when they've been shot and processed and scanned.

First image -

A Photographer

Duncan_2_mr.jpg

for info - off camera flash was from camera right shot through a brolly, data was 1/125th sec, f5.6 using a 210mm rodenstock lens

Shot with Ilford FP4, dev'd in ilfosol, and scanned using an Epson V700 pro.

Only PS is some minor mark removal and usm after resize for web

C&C welcomed.

Thanks Matt, i have a 16x12 print pf it int he house - the detail is amazing - thus why i love LF :)

for info some of the future shots include someone playing guitar hero in a church, someone playing golf on the roof of a car park and possibly someone dressed as a cow hoovering in a field.

I really like this. It has a gritty feel and I think you've got the composition spot on and the DoF makes him really stand out against what could have otherwise been a cluttered background.

And your thoughts on future shots are intriguing. I'll follow this with pleasure.:clap:

:plusone:

Will you get feedback from your tutor on each one, or have to wait until the whole project's finished? If you do get feedback it would be really interesting to know what he/she said - after us lot have put our twopenn'th in. :D

Looking forward to the next one. :)

Sorry meant to add before ...

The first image - lecturers really liked, thought that the "curve" of the pose was really good and the X from the bits in the back framed it, the DOF creates Do-nuts which are cool and the detail from the 5x4 is awesome. SOme debate on the fence running through his head, with one lecturer disliking that element and our senior lecturer saying it was the only place it could be... never agree that lot.

Second in the series - shot today...

Firstly - thanks to the Rev Povey for letting me shoot this in the church :)

I wanted the background dark so dropped the ambient by 3 stops, then used a flashgun bounced into a white box velcro'd to the front of the TV as the main light (giving the look that the tv was on, and then a snooted flash as a rim light.

Shot on Delta 100 at f5.6 1/15sec, not been seen by my lecturers yet and needs a re-scan as i think the scanner was dusty as there's lots of dust on the scanned pic but none on the neg so will re-scan after cleaning it.

Comments welcome :)

Wow, the lighting works really well in this and is well beyond my comprehension :D

I just have one little niggle and that's the cut off plaque in the top right. But nonetheless I really like it.

3rd in the series of 20 (minimum) is -

A Mountain Biker -

lecturer really liked the space in it signifying the great outdoors, my own personal issue is the shadow from his nose.

I really like the composition and the DoF is spot on capturing all of his details well (including the nose shadow :D) but, tbh, I wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't pointed it out.

Thanks Bruja - the shadow i never noticed to begin with until i'd been looking at every inch of it at 100%

4th shot -

A Race Car Driver (off camera flash camera right and left)

5th shot

I really like these well done  Your really thinking outside "The box" and creating excellent images from it. My only worry is your last three images - The Podiatrist has a lot of dust spots on it and I'm not 100% where your point of focus is, it looks like the shoes are your point of focus so he is just out of focus. The Rockstar is also out of focus but your idea, pose and lighting are spot on!! The Executive is nice also but just be careful about the reflections from your lighting as I can see the bounce in the top right mirror and it also hitting the picture makes it a bit distracting. It's not the most out of the box shot you've taken as I know quite a few executives who like a good swallow in their local! That rockstart shot is spot on. The light is excellent and it just fits right in with what you've told us your brief is. What are you doing your HNC or HND graded unit? Keep up the good work

Hey Ally, thanks for that :)

HNC Graded unit :)

Yeah the podiatrist one still has to be touched up and was pretty dark so the focus was out slightly and the rockstar one i may just reshoot anyway as i had to PS the guitar in from one of the other shots as ther flash blew it out, although i quite like the idea that it is slightly out of focus :)

The executive - yeah that's my least favourite shot at the moment, i should have plenty time to reshoot something else for him though...problem was the weather meant our planned shot fell through so we ended up trying something else.

Don't worry the HNC is a peace of **** We had 12/15 days to do our graded unit, fun times ;) Nice to see your enjoying the 4x5 format, Colour trannys are never the same once you see them in 4x5!!!

ah totally, my first experience of 4x5 was a colour tranny :)

yeah hnc = crusing to get the bit of paper - been accepted for my HND next year too :)

Kool, My college doesn't do a HND so I couldn't go forward. It would take funding away from my degree anyway so maybe it was a good thing.

neither does mine but i'm progressing onto the HND at Stevenson in edinburgh and hoping to do the PDA after that

The degree courses don't offer what i was looking for so not a route for me :)

Love your stuff ifotou, the lighting is amazing on them. I especially like the guitar hero and Iron lady. Very good!

My graded unit deadline isnt far away, starting to panic now!!

Think ours is the 18th? I might want to check that :D

I'm doing sort of a theme of nightmares and dreams. We've got ten images to complete, finished about seven, just got lots of editing to do now :|

If I'm brave enough I'll consider posting them :)
