pretty basic question here... Just wondering what you use to everyone uses to attach a flash to a stand? My first flash came with a little stand with a thread at the bottom which you could screw into a tripod base plate. But I've just bought a flash used which doesn't have anything...

There are many such adapters available on e-bay/amazon & probably all half decent camera stores.
In addition to the freestanding models, most of mine are plastic blocks with a 1/4-20 screw underneath & a flash shoe on top. Some have hot shoes with a PC connector, others have an optical sensor to allow them to fire the attached flash as a slave, then there are several that allow multiple flashes to be fitted...
the most basic are like https://www.amazon.co.uk/Camera-Ada...oe+mount&qid=1639059130&s=electronics&sr=1-57

The stand from your first flash will probably work perfectly with your new flash. there are some non standard hot shoes (eg. Minolta/Sony 'Smart accessory')

Either an S-type bracket for mounting a front firing softbox, or "better" for a speedlight (IMO) is a swivel type umbrella holder for use with umbrellas and reverse firing softboxes.

If you are not using them with modifiers then there are a lot of options, many that don't even require stands... a cold-shoe on a clamp is surprisingly useful.
